Enhanced remediation of cadmium-polluted soil and water using facilely prepared MnO2-coated rice husk biomass

Yutong Zhang et al.

Summary: Metal oxide-modified biochar is effective for remediation and adsorption of heavy metals in polluted soil and wastewater. This study investigated the interaction between cellulose and hemicellulose with metal oxides on the surface of biochar/biomass, as well as the loading stability, adsorption capacity, and mechanism of metal oxides. The findings suggest that the use of weakly crystalline birnessite rice husk biomass composites (MBC) can immobilize heavy metals in cadmium-polluted soil and wastewater through monolayer chemisorption, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 115.04 mg g-1 and reducing Cd concentration by up to 62.5%.

Insights into selective adsorption mechanism of copper and zinc ions onto biogas residue-based adsorbent: Theoretical calculation and electronegativity difference

Jingwen Pan et al.

Summary: This study prepared carboxylated biogas residue (BR-COOH) to remove Cu2+ and Zn2+ from single/binary heavy metal ions solution, showing higher adsorption capacity for Cu2+ than Zn2+ and identified carboxy groups as the main adsorption sites. Density functional theory calculation results indicated that Cu2+ adsorption onto BR-COOH was more stable than Zn2+. Metal ions adsorption capacity of BR-COOH was positively correlated with electronegativity, with metal ions easily interacting with the negatively charged oxygen in carboxyl groups.

Enhancing Cd(II) adsorption on rice straw biochar by modification of iron and manganese oxides

Wen-Tao Tan et al.

Summary: Metal oxide-modified biochar showed excellent adsorption performance in wastewater treatment. In this study, iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) oxide-modified biochar (BC-FM) was synthesized using rice straw biochar, and its adsorption process, removal effect, and mechanism of cadmium (Cd) adsorption in wastewater treatment were investigated. The results demonstrated that BC-FM had a significantly higher adsorption capacity for Cd compared to other modified biochars mentioned in the literature. The Cd adsorption by BC-FM followed a spontaneous chemical adsorption mechanism. Additionally, BC-FM exhibited good reusability and stability. Therefore, metal oxide-modified biochar can be an efficient adsorbent for treating Cd-contaminated wastewater.

Efficient removal of selenite in aqueous solution by MOF-801 and Fe3O4/MOF-801: Adsorptive behavior and mechanism study

Kangchun Li et al.

Summary: Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) and MOFs-based composites have been widely used for adsorbing heavy metals due to their large surface area and porosity. In this study, MOF-801 and its composite Fe3O4/MOF-801 were prepared and used as adsorbents to capture Se(IV) in water solution. The maximum adsorption capacity of Fe3O4/MOF-801 was higher than MOF-801, and coexisting anions had minimal effect on Se(IV) adsorption. The mechanisms of Se(IV) removal by the two adsorbents were thoroughly analyzed using Zeta potential, FTIR, and XPS. XPS analysis confirmed the presence of charge transfer in Fe3O4/MOF-801, which facilitated Se(IV) adsorption and reduction.
