Sexual Dimorphism in Extracellular Matrix Composition and Viscoelasticity of the Healthy and Inflamed Mouse Brain

Clara Sophie Batzdorf et al.

Summary: Gender differences in brain stiffness were found in both healthy and sick mice, with males having softer cortex than females. These differences were associated with sex-specific expression levels of collagen and laminin. This indicates the importance of considering sex in studying brain tissue constitution in health and disease, especially in relation to gender differences in MS.

Visualization of Inflammation in Experimental Colitis by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Very Small Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Particles

Laura Golusda et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), are characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. This study utilized very small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (VSOPs) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect intestinal inflammation in mouse models. The results suggest that VSOPs can serve as a potential contrast agent for early non-invasive diagnosis of IBD, depending on the hyaluronic acid content.

The extracellular matrix as modifier of neuroinflammation and remyelination in multiple sclerosis

Samira Ghorbani et al.

Summary: Failure of remyelination in multiple sclerosis lesions is influenced by changes in extracellular matrix components, which not only impair oligodendrocyte recruitment but also enhance inflammatory responses. The deposition of matrix members is mainly due to cells such as reactive astrocytes and microglia/macrophages, leading to both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory effects within the lesions.

Contribution of Tissue Inflammation and Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption to Brain Softening in a Mouse Model of Multiple Sclerosis

Rafaela Vieira Silva et al.

Summary: Neuroinflammatory processes in multiple sclerosis lead to brain tissue softening, but the mechanical integrity changes remain unclear. This study used MRE and MRI contrast agents to investigate inflammation spread and local elasticity changes in EAE brains, providing a promising non-invasive tool for clinical assessment of neuroinflammation.
