Differential susceptibility to arsenic in glutathione S-transferase omega 2 (GST-O2)-targeted freshwater water flea Daphnia magna mutants

Haksoo Jeong et al.

Summary: To examine the role of GST-O2 genes in biotransformation and detoxification in Daphnia magna, the study investigated various responses such as in vivo endpoints, arsenic speciation, enzymatic activities, and gene expression pathways. The results showed that MT fleas had higher sensitivity to arsenic and a lower rate of arsenate reduction, leading to higher accumulation of arsenic concentrations and decreased protection against toxicity. The mRNA expression of other GST genes increased but the enzymatic activity of GST decreased in the MT group compared to the WT group. The study highlights the important role of GST-O2 in arsenic biotransformation and detoxification in D. magna.

Outside the Safe Operating Space of the Planetary Boundary for Novel Entities

Linn Persson et al.

Summary: This article suggests that the safe operating space of the planetary boundary for novel entities is exceeded due to the increasing production and releases exceeding the global capacity for assessment and monitoring. Plastic pollution is highlighted as a major concern. The article presents an impact pathway from the production of novel entities to their impacts on Earth system processes and proposes several criteria for control variables. Urgent action is recommended to reduce the harm associated with exceeding the boundary by reducing the production and releases of novel entities.

Emerging trends in nanoparticle toxicity and the significance of using Daphnia as a model organism

Zhiquan Liu et al.

Summary: Nanoparticle production is increasing rapidly due to its wide applications, but concerns over their environmental impact arise from their inevitable release into the environment. The microcrustacean Daphnia spp. has emerged as an important freshwater model organism for nanotoxicity studies due to its biological properties and high sensitivity to environmental contaminants and stressors.

Genome-wide identification of glutathione S-transferase gene family members in tea plant (Camellia sinensis) and their response to environmental stress

Qinghai Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive identification and analysis of GSTs in tea plant were conducted, and their important roles in plant growth, development, and stress responses were revealed. The study found that CsGSTs were unevenly distributed across the tea plant genome and tandem duplication was the main driving force for their expansion. Furthermore, CsGSTs were found to respond to multiple stresses and exhibit different expression patterns in different tissues. CsGSTU19, localized in the nucleus and cell membrane, was proven to be involved in tea plant defense against temperature stresses and Co. camelliae infection.

The Combined Effect of Plastic Particles Size and Concentration on Rotifers' (Brachionus plicatilis) Performance

Sui Yamning et al.

Summary: The presence of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems is a global concern, with nano-sized plastics being especially harmful. This study evaluated the combined impacts of different sizes and concentrations of polystyrene microspheres on the overall performance of rotifers. The results showed that high concentrations of microplastics close to the nanometer size significantly impaired the vitality of rotifers, while medium-sized microplastics had minimal damage except for specific groups.

Metabolomics Reveal Nanoplastic-Induced Mitochondrial Damage in Human Liver and Lung Cells

Siyi Lin et al.

Summary: Plastic debris in the global biosphere is a growing concern, with the toxicity of nanoplastic (NPs) in humans not yet fully understood. This study investigates the impact of 80 nm NPs on mitochondrial functions and metabolic pathways in human liver and lung cells. The results show that NPs can enter the cells and cause mitochondrial damage, leading to altered mitochondrial functions and metabolic toxicity. Liver cells are more vulnerable to NP exposure compared to lung cells. This study provides insights into the potential adverse effects of NP-induced mitochondrial dysfunction on human health.

Genome-wide identification and functional analysis of the glutathione S-transferase (GST) family in Pomacea canaliculata

Youfu Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) in cold acclimation and cold stress-response mechanisms in the invasive snail P. canaliculata. A total of 30 PcGSTs were classified into seven classes and their expression patterns in different tissues were examined. RNA-seq analysis and qRT-PCR experiments revealed significant changes in expression levels of certain PcGST genes during cold acclimation, providing insights into the mechanisms underlying cold stress responses.

Nanoplastics are neither microplastics nor engineered nanoparticles

Julien Gigault et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics have unique characteristics compared to microplastics and engineered nanomaterials, including transportation properties, interactions with natural colloids and light, high proportion of particle molecules on the surface, bioavailability, and diffusion times for plastic additives release. Nanoscale plastics must be considered distinct from both microplastics and engineered nanomaterials.

Genome-wide identification of ascorbate-glutathione cycle gene families in soybean (Glycine max) reveals gene duplication events and specificity of gene members linked to development and stress conditions

Jose Helio Costa et al.

Summary: The study identified and analyzed AsA-GSH cycle genes in leguminous plants, revealing the importance of these genes in regulating ROS accumulation and detoxifying oxidative stress. It was found that different tissues and physiological conditions induced the expression of specific genes related to AsA-GSH cycle, highlighting the functional specificity and evolutionary events in leguminous plants. Additionally, genotypes tolerant to biotic and abiotic stresses showed increased expression levels of certain genes compared to susceptible genotypes.
