A facile structural manipulation strategy to prepare ultra-strong, super-tough, and thermally stable polylactide/nucleating agent composites

Tairong Kuang et al.

Summary: This study reported a facile strategy for fabricating high-performance PLA composites by adding self-assembled nucleation agent, which achieved a chain-like interlocking shish-kebab crystal structure and resulted in superior mechanical properties and thermal stability. Thus, the super-PLA materials could serve as potential alternatives to commodity and engineering plastics.

Thermal behavior of PLA plasticized by commercial and cardanol-derived plasticizers and the effect on the mechanical properties

Antonio Greco et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal properties of poly(lactic acid) with different plasticizers, revealing that PLA plasticized with cardanol derivatives shows higher enthalpy relaxation below T-g, while PLA plasticized with PEG exhibits higher mobility above T-g. In terms of mechanical properties, PLA plasticized with ECA has a lower modulus but forms thicker crystals during crystallization, leading to a more significant increase in modulus in semicrystalline samples.

Functionality of Cellulose Nanofiber as Bio-Based Nucleating Agent and Nano-Reinforcement Material to Enhance Crystallization and Mechanical Properties of Polylactic Acid Nanocomposite

Siti Shazra Shazleen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the nucleation effect of incorporating cellulose nanofibers (CNF) into polylactic acid (PLA), showing that CNF at 3 wt.% significantly improved both the crystallization rate and mechanical properties of PLA. However, at CNF content higher than 3 wt.%, the crystallization rate decreased, indicating possible agglomeration. CNF at 3 wt.% plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance of PLA.

Preparation of super-toughened Poly(L-lactide) composites under elongational flow: A strategy for balancing stiffness and ductility

Zhi-Tao Yang et al.

Summary: A novel extrusion device, eccentric rotor extruder (ERE), was used to prepare high-performance PLA/PCL composites with elongational flow. SEM showed in-situ fiberization and improved interfacial adhesion of PLA/PCL, while DSC, 2D-SAXS, 2D-WAXD, and DMA were used to analyze compatibility and crystallization. Enhanced compatibility and crystallinity were confirmed to be induced by heterogeneous crystal nucleation on nano-fibrillated PCL phases and orientation of PLA, leading to significant improvement in elongation at break of PLA with a low loading of PCL.

Summary: In-situ grafting of PLA onto cellulose nanofibers using DCP as initiator enhanced the interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of the resulting bionanocomposites, with significant improvements in tensile modulus, strength, elongation at break, and impact strength. The increased crystallinity of the grafted CNF-g-PLA and improved melt strength of the nanocomposites contribute to the enhanced properties.

Summary: Bio-based composites made of PLLA and CD-Lim were prepared by melt extrusion, with the successful encapsulation of volatile d-limonene molecules within beta-cyclodextrin cages. Despite some limonene release during high-temperature processing, the filler's good dispersion acted as a nucleating agent favoring PLLA crystal growth. Thermomechanical analysis confirmed the lowered glass transition temperature and constant stiffness of the modified materials, which are crucial in PLLA-based formulations.

Crystallization of a Self-Assembling Nucleator in Poly(L-lactide) Melt

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crystallization behavior of a soluble nucleator TMC-328 in a PLLA matrix at different temperatures. The nucleator forms fibrous structures via self-assembling, which develop into interconnected networks as temperature decreases. The density of TMC-328 crystal nuclei and crystallization rates exhibit power law dependence on supersaturation, while solid-melt interfacial energy and critical nucleus properties have been determined for the first time. The presence of TMC-328 fibrils enhances PLLA crystallization rate due to increased nucleating surface area.

Relationship between the Stereocomplex Crystallization Behavior and Mechanical Properties of PLLA/PDLA Blends

Hye-Seon Park et al.

Summary: Poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) is a promising biomedical polymer material with a wide range of applications. By blending PLLA with different amounts of poly (d-lactic acid) (PDLA) through a melt blending process, the study systematically investigated the effect of PDLA on the crystallization behavior, thermal, and mechanical properties of PLLA. The results showed that increasing PDLA content led to easier formation of stereocomplexes, increased crystallinity, and enhanced mechanical strength in the PLLA/PDLA blends.
