Biphasic mineralized collagen-based composite scaffold for cranial bone regeneration in developing sheep

Jingchuan Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a biphasic mineralized collagen-based bone scaffold was successfully used to repair large-sized cranial bone defects in sheep. The scaffold showed good interfacial bond between the porous and compact phases, providing appropriate mechanical protection and structural integrity.

Biomaterials for recruiting and activating endogenous stem cells in situ tissue regeneration

Ingrid Safina et al.

Summary: In situ tissue engineering is a new approach that utilizes biomaterials to harness the body's own stem/progenitor cells for regenerating diseased or injured tissue. This review explores the recent advances in in situ tissue regenerative therapies gathered from in vitro and in vivo studies, and examines the different ways biomaterials have been incorporated for therapeutic applications in various tissues and diseases.

Mineralized Hydrogels Induce Bone Regeneration in Critical Size Cranial Defects

Xinchen Wu et al.

Summary: Sequential mineralization allows integration of minerals into the 3D structure of hydrogels, with collagen-based hydrogels mineralized over 10 cycles. The compressive modulus of the gels increases significantly after mineralization for 30 minutes and 24 hours, with XRD and FTIR analyses indicating mainly hydroxyapatite minerals. In vitro experiments show increased gene expression and biocompatibility, with in vivo studies demonstrating successful bone regeneration. These results highlight the potential of sequentially mineralized hydrogel scaffolds for bone repair and regeneration.

Summary: This review discusses the mineralization of collagen fibrils into hydroxyapatite, dividing it into intrafibrillar and extrafibrillar mineralization. Various mechanisms and strategies for inducing biomimetic intrafibrillar mineralization are examined, along with applications for bone regeneration and dentin repair using mineralized collagen fibers. Potential future trends in collagen-based materials for bone and tooth repair are also speculated.

In Vitro Mineralization of Collagen

Bernette Maria Oosterlaken et al.

Summary: Collagen mineralization is a biological process found in various skeletal elements in the animal kingdom, with a focus on understanding bone formation processes and synthesizing tissue engineering scaffolds. This paper reviews in vitro efforts towards collagen mineralization, primarily centered on hydroxyapatite and silica, with a proposed general mechanism for intrafibrillar mineralization of collagen. Future outlooks for improving collagen-based tissue engineering scaffolds are also discussed.

Autologous bone graft: Is it still the gold standard? *

Andrew H. Schmidt

Summary: Bone grafting has a long history of successful clinical use, with autograft bone transplantation being the most common approach despite its associated complications. This article reviews the biology of fracture healing, the properties of bone grafts, and the specific advantages and problems of autograft bone. Recent techniques such as the Reamer Irrigator Aspirator have significantly reduced complications in bone autograft harvesting.
