Determining local residence time distributions in twin-screw extruder elements via smoothed particle hydrodynamics

Hannes Bauer et al.

Summary: In this study, an alternative in-silico method based on SPH was proposed to investigate the variability of local RTDs in TSE elements. By simulating five geometrically different screw elements, the research explored how RTDs change with screw speed, throughput, and screw length, and provided insights into flow mechanisms through in-silico tracer experiments. The good agreement with experimental results confirms the validity of this approach.

Metamodeling-based simulation optimization in manufacturing problems: a comparative study

Joao Victor Soares do Amaral et al.

Summary: Optimization is a powerful tool in modern industry, allowing decision-makers to allocate resources and address complex manufacturing problems confidently. However, simulation optimization has limitations in day-to-day operations, leading to the exploration of metamodel-based simulation optimization (MBSO) as an alternative approach. This article evaluates the performance of different machine learning algorithms, experimental designs, and sample sizes in building metamodels for real manufacturing cases. The results show that the random forest algorithm and random design with a 40x sample size perform better, and hyperparameter optimization reduces metamodel error by about 32.83%.

Integrated numerical simulation and quality attributes of soybean protein isolate extrusion under different screw speeds and combinations

Dongyu Sun et al.

Summary: Using numerical simulation methods, the study investigates the molten soybean protein isolate (SPI) under different screw speeds and combinations. The results show that increasing screw speed can promote dispersion, decrease shear viscosity and residence time, while a smaller axial channel width can increase fluidity.

Soft sensor for content prediction in an integrated continuous pharmaceutical formulation line based on the residence time distribution of unit operations

Martin Gyurkes et al.

Summary: In this study, a concentration predicting soft sensor was developed based on the Residence Time Distribution (RTD) of a pharmaceutical formulation line. The RTD was investigated using color-based tracer experiments with image analysis. The study also demonstrated the feasibility of coupling unit operations in silico. The soft sensor showed accurate predictions compared to validation experiments, proving its adequacy.

A Composite Model for Melting, Pressure and Fill Factor Profiles in a Metered Fed Closely Intermeshing Counter-rotating Twin Screw Extruder

K. Wilczynski et al.

Summary: A composite model of solids conveying, melting and melt flow in a closely intermeshing counter-rotating twin-screw extruder of modular design is developed. It combines melt conveying models with new melting and solids conveying models. Computations are made for axial fill factor, pressure, temperature, and melting profiles, and the results are compared with experimental data.
