On the Lagrangian-Eulerian coupling in the immersed finite element/difference method

Jae H. Lee et al.

Summary: The immersed boundary (IB) method is a non-body conforming approach to fluid structure interaction (FSI). This study systematically investigates the effect of the choice of regularized delta function in several fluid-structure interaction benchmark tests using the immersed finite element/difference (IFED) method. The results show that the choice of kernel function, kernel width, and relative mesh widths of the Lagrangian and Eulerian discretizations all have an impact on the accuracy of the methodology.

A hybrid semi-Lagrangian cut cell method for advection-diffusion problems with Robin boundary conditions in moving domains

Aaron Barrett et al.

Summary: A new discretization approach for advection-diffusion problems with Robin boundary conditions on complex domains is presented, based on second-order cut cell finite volume methods. The method demonstrates second-order accuracy in various norms and the ability to convert chemical species across moving boundaries.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIBRIN BRANCH STRUCTURE BEFORE AND AFTER GELATION

Aaron L. Fogelson et al.

Summary: In this study, we introduced a kinetic model of fibrin polymerization during blood clotting, which accurately captured the relationship between gel branching structure and polymerization conditions. We extended our previous analysis to include both pregel and postgel dynamics using a PDE-based framework, and also incorporated spatial heterogeneity and spatial transport processes into the model. The study revealed that the spatial-temporal dynamics of the model varied as the time scales of branch formation, monomer introduction, and diffusion processes changed.

Handling Neumann and Robin boundary conditions in a fictitious domain volume penalization framework

Ramakrishnan Thirumalaisamy et al.

Summary: The study introduces a flux-based volume penalization method for imposing inhomogeneous Neumann/Robin boundary conditions on embedded interfaces. By numerically constructing flux-forcing functions, complex boundaries can be controlled, with spatial variations allowed for the imposed flux values. The method extends to include Robin boundary conditions, relying on a signed distance function for numerical construction minus the explicit delta function required in other diffuse domain equations.

Numerical method for modeling photosynthesis of algae on pulsing soft corals

Matea Santiago et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical method to study the pulsing behavior of soft corals and explores its relationship with photosynthesis through mathematical modeling and numerical simulations. The study finds that fluid dynamics significantly affect photosynthesis, and that the Reynolds number has advantages for mixing and photosynthesis.

Predictive Model for Thrombus Formation After Transcatheter Valve Replacement

Hoda Hatoum et al.

Summary: Leaflet thrombosis is a major complication after TAVR, and a semi-empirical, mathematical model using vorticity flux (CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER GHE) was found to be more effective in predicting thrombus occurrence compared to measures derived from CFD. By analyzing both dimensional scaling and CFD, the model showed promising sensitivity and specificity in predicting valve thrombosis following TAVR.
