AAA Revisited: A Comprehensive Review of Risk Factors, Management, and Hallmarks of Pathogenesis

Veronika Kessler et al.

Summary: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a life-threatening cardiovascular condition, with a prevalence of about 2-3% in the industrialized world. Older men with a history of smoking are at a higher risk for developing AAA. Screening programs can help detect and prevent ruptures of the aorta, which have a high associated death rate.

LncRNA H19 Regulates Proliferation, Apoptosis and ECM Degradation of Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells Via miR-1-3p/ADAM10 Axis in Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm

Zhineng Fan et al.

Summary: In patients with Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA), the overexpression of long non-coding RNA H19 was found to inhibit VSMC proliferation, accelerate apoptosis and ECM degradation. Changes in miR-1-3p and ADAM10 were also observed in TAA, with H19 influencing ADAM10 expression by targeting miR-1-3p.

Systematic review of genome-wide association studies of abdominal aortic aneurysm

Tejas P. Singh et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed previous AAA GWAS and identified 33 SNPs associated with AAA diagnosis at genome-wide significance. However, the association between SNPs and AAA growth was not adequately examined. Previous GWAS have various design limitations, such as inconsistent case and control ascertainment and limited phenotyping of the AAAs.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms

John Anagnostakos et al.

Summary: Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are common in older adults and can lead to serious morbidity and mortality if not treated promptly. The causes include trauma, infection, and inflammatory disorders, with risk factors such as smoking, advanced age, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and coronary artery disease. The pathophysiology involves arterial insult leading to inflammation and weakening of the arterial wall, requiring monitoring of size and growth rate to prevent rupture. Management options include controlling risk factors, surgical intervention based on risk assessment, and post-operative monitoring for complications. Advancements in technology have improved the diagnosis and treatment of AAA in recent years.

The elevated expression of TLR4 and MMP9 in human abdominal aortic aneurysm tissues and its implication

Tan Li et al.

Summary: This study revealed the increased expression of TLR4 and MMP9 in human AAA tissues, with lymphocytes showing a higher positive rate. TLR4 and MMP9 levels were related to circulating CRP, and high TLR4 expression was associated with larger AAA while high MMP9 expression was linked to thrombus presence within AAA.

Summary: The study identifies a SNP, rs41291957 (A), near the miR-143/145 cluster that upregulates miR-143 and miR-145, modulating vascular smooth cell phenotype and acting as a protective factor against coronary artery disease.
