Role of Epithelial-Endothelial Cell Interaction in the Pathogenesis of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Infection

Kenrie Pui-Yan Hui et al.

Summary: This study examines the interaction between epithelial cells and endothelial cells during SARS-CoV-2 infection. It identifies soluble mediators released by infected epithelial cells that induce proinflammatory responses and upregulate adhesion molecules in endothelial cells. Imatinib is shown to suppress these changes, highlighting its immunomodulatory properties.

IFIT3 and IFIT5 Play Potential Roles in Innate Immune Response of Porcine Pulmonary Microvascular Endothelial Cells to Highly Pathogenic Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus

Yanmei Wu et al.

Summary: The roles of IFIT3 and IFIT5 in inhibiting HP-PRRSV replication in porcine pulmonary MVECs were investigated, and the effects of astragalus polysaccharides (APS) on them were studied. It was found that IFIT3 and IFIT5 play an important role in inhibiting HP-PRRSV replication, and APS suppresses the multiplication of the virus by upregulating their expression.

Respiratory viral infections drive different lung cytokine profiles in pigs

Hanna Turlewicz-Podbielska et al.

Summary: This study found that pigs infected with IAV or PRRSV alone and co-infected with both pathogens induced different kinetics of local cytokine response. The strong positive correlation between local TNF-alpha and IL-10 concentration and lung pathology suggests that these cytokines are involved in the induction of lung lesions during infection. However, no significant increase in lung cytokine response was observed in pigs co-inoculated simultaneously with both pathogens compared to single inoculations.

Research Progress on the Antiviral Activity of Glycyrrhizin and its Derivatives in Liquorice

Changchao Huan et al.

Summary: Liquorice, a traditional medicine, contains triterpenoids such as glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhetinic acid which have inhibitory effects on various viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. These compounds work through mechanisms such as inhibition of virus replication, direct inactivation of viruses, and inhibition of inflammation. Further research on unknown antiviral mechanisms, structural modifications, and drug combinations is emphasized for future studies.

Influenza A virus infects pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells leading to microvascular leakage and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines

Tiantian Han et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that H1N1 influenza virus can infect endothelial cells, resulting in increased permeability of pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, but does not replicate efficiently in endothelial cells. Bioinformatics tools identified key genes and drugs targeting inflammatory pathways, offering new insights for treating pulmonary microvascular leakage caused by the H1N1 virus.
