Tunable nonreciprocal thermal emitter based on metal grating and graphene

Jun Wu et al.

Summary: By sandwiching a graphene monolayer between a top metallic grating and a bottom magneto-optical film backed with a metallic mirror, tunable nonreciprocal radiation effect has been achieved. The nonreciprocal radiation performance remains perfectly within certain range of structure parameters, which is beneficial for practical fabrication and applications. The proposed scheme allows for flexible tuning of nonreciprocal radiation by the gate voltage of graphene without the need for redesigning and refabricating the structure.

Reaching the Ultimate Efficiency of Solar Energy Harvesting with a Nonreciprocal Multijunction Solar Cell

Yubin Park et al.

Summary: The Landsberg limit represents the ultimate efficiency limit of solar energy harvesting, which can be reached by using nonreciprocal elements. A nonreciprocal multijunction solar cell has been introduced, showing that it can reach the Landsberg limit with an infinite number of layers and outperform a standard reciprocal cell with a finite number of layers. This work simplifies the device configuration needed to reach the ultimate limit of solar energy conversion and suggests a way to improve solar energy harvesting using nonreciprocity.

Dual-band nonreciprocal thermal radiation by coupling optical Tamm states in magnetophotonic multilayers

Jun Wu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a dual-band nonreciprocal thermal emitter achieved by utilizing the magneto-optical material and the coupling effect of two optical Tamm states (OTSs). The emitter exhibits near-complete dual-channel nonreciprocal thermal radiation at the wavelengths of 15.337 μm and 15.731 μm, assisted by the nonreciprocity of the magneto-optical material and the coupling effect of two OTSs for an external magnetic field of 3T and an incident angle of 56 degrees. The work may open the way for constructing dual-band and multi-band nonreciprocal thermal emitters.

The giant enhancement of nonreciprocal radiation in Thue-morse aperiodic structures

Jun Wu et al.

Summary: This paper systematically investigates the strong nonreciprocal radiation effect in Thue-morse aperiodic structure. The giant enhancement of nonreciprocal radiation is achieved by placing a Thue-morse aperiodic magnetophotonic crystal on top of a metallic mirror. The nonreciprocal radiation performance can be expanded to smaller wavebands, and has potential applications in light harvesting devices and thermal emitters.

Evolution and Nonreciprocity of Loss-Induced Topological Phase Singularity Pairs

Mengqi Liu et al.

Summary: The paper demonstrates the origin, evolution, and application of topological phase singularity pairs (TPSPs) resulting from BICs in nonreciprocal and non-Hermitian systems. The nonreciprocity contributes to creating accidental BICs asymmetrically, each of which can split into TPSP with topological charges 11 in reflection phases by inserting loss. Criteria to predict both number and angular positions of asymmetric BICs are established, providing new opportunities in thermal science, magneto-optics, or topological metasurfaces.

Near-complete violation of Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation in ultrathin magnetic Weyl semimetal films

Jun Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the nonreciprocal thermal radiation of the magnetic Weyl semimetal film and finds that strong nonreciprocal radiation at 9.15 μm wavelength can be achieved with a 100 nm thickness of the film. The enhanced nonreciprocity is attributed to Fabry-Perot resonances, making the MWSM film a promising candidate for engineering ultrathin and simple nonreciprocal thermal emitters.

Enhanced nonreciprocal radiation in Weyl semimetals by attenuated total reflection

Xiaohu Wu et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the potential of Weyl semimetals in verifying Kirchhoff's law, but current designs fall short in achieving perfect nonreciprocal radiation. A new design using attenuated total reflection demonstrates perfect nonreciprocal radiation at a shorter wavelength and smaller angle, with a significant difference in directional emissivity and absorptivity. This design shows promise in experimenting with nonreciprocal materials and Kirchhoff's law.
