Experimental and numerical investigation of natural convection for a fully closed cabinet subject to chimneys

Yogesh Fulpagare et al.

Summary: This study focuses on improving the natural convection heat dissipation of a fully closed cabinet. Both experiments and simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of a heat sink with chimney effect, baffle, ceiling, and different ceiling angles with perforation. The findings showed that the heat sink with chimney effect and baffle improved airflow circulation and reduced thermal resistance. The height of the baffle, perforation, and ceiling angle had different impacts on the thermal resistance. Optimized design parameters were suggested to further decrease the thermal resistance and enhance natural convection potential.

On the enhancement of natural convection heat transfer with multi-branching fins

Vidyadhar Karlapalem et al.

Summary: The thermal performance of a multi-branching fin and a fin with only two branches under laminar natural convection conditions was numerically investigated. It was found that multi-branching fins perform slightly better than fins with only two branches when gravity acts along the length of the fins. However, when gravity acts along the thickness of the fin-stem, asymmetric arrangement of branches results in a 14.7% enhancement in heat dissipation relative to optimal symmetric arrangement.

Revisit on the natural convection from horizontal multi-channel rectangular-fin heat sinks

Hung-Jyun Liou et al.

Summary: Unsteady numerical analysis was conducted for horizontal 16-channel rectangular-fin heat sinks with and without guard-fin blocks to clarify their effects on flow characteristics and heat transfer performance. The study found that guard-fin blocks can relieve side-flow suppression on the outer channels of low-fin heat sinks and increase average heat transfer coefficients by about 20%. High-fin heat sinks show stronger buoyancy and a dominant end-flow, with guard-fin blocks having little effect.

A natural convection horizontal straight-fin heat sink design problem to enhance heat dissipation performance

Cheng-Hung Huang et al.

Summary: An optimized design for a three-dimensional natural convection horizontal straight-fin heat sink was examined using numerical and experimental methods. The results showed that considering the fin heights and shift displacement as design variables and using the Levenberg-Marquardt method led to significant improvements in the heat sink's performance, which was validated through experiments.

Numerical study of oblique fins under natural convection with experimental validation

Sheng-Wei Chang et al.

Summary: 3D numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the thermofluids characteristics of oblique fin heat sinks under natural convection. The study identified critical parameters affecting performance, proposed an optimum heat sink configuration, and introduced a novel symmetrical oblique fin design. Experimental verification confirmed that the proposed oblique fin heat sink offers over 3°C reduction in maximum temperature compared to continuous fin heat sinks.

Forced air cooled heat sink with uniformly distributed temperature of power electronic modules

Christian Bunnagel et al.

Summary: The paper discusses an approach to design a forced air-cooling heat sink that can uniformly distribute temperature on semiconductor modules. By modifying a conventional fin-based heat sink, an air guide plate is attached to redistribute airflow through the fins. Numerical simulations show that the proposed approach achieves a good uniform distribution of temperature.

Effects of pin fin height, spacing and orientation to natural convection heat transfer for inline pin fin and plate heat sinks by experimental investigation

Ahmet Ali Sertkaya et al.

Summary: In this study, pin fin and plate heat sinks were investigated in terms of natural convection and radiation heat transfer by experimental means. It was found that increasing the number of pin fins up to a threshold can improve thermal performance, but beyond that threshold, the thermal convection coefficient decreases significantly. Increasing the number of pin fins partly compensates the reduction in thermal convection coefficient by increasing the surface area up to a certain level.

Performance of displaced fin heatsink in natural convection subject to upward and downward arrangement

Ali Abbas et al.

Summary: A new design of a heat sink with displaced fin arrangement was proposed to enhance thermal performance in natural convection, demonstrating a reduction in total thermal resistance. The parametric study showed that fin spacing plays a crucial role in heat sink performance, followed by fin height and length. Numerical investigation indicated a 11% performance enhancement with a 28.7% reduction in mass compared to regular rectangular heat sinks.

Summary: The study investigated the thermal performance of water-cooled cold plates used in thermal management of batteries for electric vehicles. It found that lower coolant inlet temperature has a significant impact on battery surface temperature, while the use of mini channel cold plate resulted in a significant reduction in battery surface temperature and improved temperature homogeneity.
