Experimental study on a hydrogen pulsating heat pipe in different heating modes

Sizhuo Li et al.

Summary: The temperature curves of a hydrogen pulsating heat pipe (PHP) in two different heating modes (stepwise heating and sudden heating) were experimentally obtained to understand its heat transfer performance. The experimental results showed that the differences in quasi-steady-state temperatures and effective thermal conductivities between the two heating modes were negligible, indicating reproducible stable heat transfer performance of the PHP in different heating modes.

Numerical study of the thermal performance of a hydrogen pulsating heat pipe

Xiao Sun et al.

Summary: A one-dimensional numerical model based on slug flow is developed to predict the thermal performance of cryogenic PHPs, demonstrating good predictive ability. The study shows that the response time of the hydrogen PHP to heat load changes is less than 5 s, and the vapor bubbles in the evaporator can be in a superheated state with similar proportions of sensible heat and latent heat in heat transfer.

Effect of the thermo-physical properties of the working fluid on the performance of a 1-m long cryogenic horizontal pulsating heat pipe

Maria Barba et al.

Summary: This paper presents the thermal performance of a one-meter long horizontal pulsating heat pipe using argon as working fluid, and compares it with previous experiments using nitrogen and neon as working fluids. Differences in the thermo-hydraulic behavior of the fluids are observed and can be linked to their thermophysical properties.

Summary: Thermal management of modern micro- and high-power electronic systems is becoming increasingly challenging due to trends in miniaturization and heat generation. Pulsating heat pipes have attracted growing interest as passive heat transfer devices with high reliability and diverse applications, distinct from traditional heat pipes. Their manufacturing methods and internal structures differ from classical heat pipes, resulting in unique thermo-hydrodynamic behaviors.

Summary: This study modified a model for ambient temperature conditions to simulate the operation of a nitrogen-based PHP, and investigated the impact of various geometric and operational parameters on the device's internal heat transfer mechanism. The results revealed the presence of optimum inner tube diameter, fill ratio, and number of turns for achieving peak performance.

Prediction of the stratified type flow transition with the linear stability analysis in horizontal pipe

Rui Zhou et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the critical transition conditions from stratified smooth flow to 2-D wave and K-H wave flow in a horizontal pipe, correlating wavelength with four dimensionless parameters and conducting experiments to verify the correlation. The effects of liquid viscosity and surface tension on the transition condition are briefly discussed. The calculated results agree reasonably well with experimental data and existing literature, indicating the feasibility of the correlation.

Effects of filling ratio of a long cryogenic Pulsating Heat Pipe

Maria Barba et al.

Summary: The study on cryogenic pulsating heat pipes for cooling superconducting devices involved heat load tests with different filling ratios using neon, argon, and nitrogen as working fluids. The tests showed that the optimal filling ratios are usually below 50%, highlighting the crucial role of fluid circulation in global heat transfer. Excess liquid at high filling ratios impedes fluid circulation and reduces heat transfer efficiency in the pulsating heat pipes.

The influence of aspect ratio on the thermal performance of a cryogenic pulsating heat pipe

J. M. Pfotenhauer et al.

Summary: Pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) are being studied for thermal management in superconducting magnets and cryogenic space applications. The study shows that vertically dominated geometries perform better than horizontally dominated ones, with minimum thermal resistance values ranging from 1.5 K/W to 20 K/W for 1-meter-long PHPs. Results indicate that a fill ratio of 70% significantly reduces the influence of orientation and heat load on the PHP's thermal resistance.

Physical principles and state-of-the-art of modeling of the pulsating heat pipe: A review

Vadim S. Nikolayev

Summary: The Pulsating Heat Pipe (PHP) is a high performance passive heat transfer device that consists of folded capillary channels filled with liquid and vapor. Its advantage lies in heat exchange occurring through both latent heat transfer and liquid convection, but its non-stationary operation requires sophisticated direct modeling. A review of theoretical studies on PHP addresses physical phenomena at a single bubble and liquid plug level, discussing modeling and simulation of interactions between bubbles and plugs.
