Realization of Long Operational Lifetimes in Vacuum-Deposited Organic Light-Emitting Devices Based on para-Substituted Pyridine Carbazolylgold(III) C∧C∧N Complexes

Chun-Yin Wong et al.

Summary: A new series of cyclometalating ligands with bulky substituents are designed and synthesized. These gold(III) complexes exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields and short excited-state lifetimes in the solid state at room temperature. Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on these complexes show promising electroluminescence performances with high external quantum efficiencies and efficiency roll-offs. The mercury-free synthesis and record-long operational lifetimes make these complexes potential emitting materials for practical OLEDs.

Substituent-Dependent Azide Addition to Isocyanides Generates Strongly Luminescent Iridium Complexes

Chenggang Jiang et al.

Summary: Ligand-centered functionalization reactions provide diverse strategies for preparing luminescent organometallic compounds with unique structures and enhanced or unusual photophysical properties. In this study, novel luminescent structures are formed by the reaction of bis-cyclo-metalated iridium bis-isocyanide complexes (1) with azide (N3-), and the outcome of the reaction depends on the substituent on the aryl isocyanide. The resulting compounds exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields, with exceptional values of 0.81 for sky-blue emission, 0.87 for yellow emission, and 0.65 for orange-red emission in polymer films.

Water-Soluble Tris(cyclometalated) Iridium(III) Complexes for Aqueous Electron and Energy Transfer Photochemistry

Mirjam R. Schreier et al.

Summary: Cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes are widely used in organic light emitting diodes and photocatalysis for solar energy conversion and synthetic organic chemistry. This article introduces the development of water-soluble variants of these complexes and explores their applications in aqueous photochemistry. The water-soluble complexes have been used in enzyme-catalyzed photoredox reactions, photoionization to yield hydrated electrons, and photochemical upconversion. However, the development of water-soluble photocatalysts still lags behind organic solvents.

Luminescent and Photofunctional Transition Metal Complexes: From Molecular Design to Diagnostic and Therapeutic Applications

Lawrence Cho-Cheung Lee et al.

Summary: There has been a growing interest in utilizing the photophysical and photochemical properties of transition metal complexes for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. This Perspective highlights the recent advances in developing luminescent and photofunctional transition metal complexes, particularly those of rhenium(I), ruthenium(II), osmium(II), iridium(III), and platinum(II) as bioimaging reagents and phototherapeutic agents. The focus is on molecular design strategies that harness and modulate the interesting photophysical and photochemical behavior of these complexes. The current challenges and future outlook of transition metal complexes for both fundamental research and clinical applications are also discussed.
