Free Energies of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reagents and Their Applications

Rishi G. Agarwal et al.

Summary: This paper provides an update and revision to a 2010 review on proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reagent thermochemistry, correcting systematic errors and presenting updated tables of thermochemical values. It discusses new conclusions and opportunities arising from the assembled data and techniques, emphasizing the importance of updated thermochemical cycles in PCET reactions for calculation and measurement of Gibbs free energies. Additionally, the paper introduces several emerging fields in PCET thermochemistry, highlighting the diversity of research being conducted in this rapidly growing field.

Tandem electrocatalytic N2 fixation via proton-coupled electron transfer

Pablo Garrido-Barros et al.

Summary: In order to solve the selectivity issue in electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis, a tandem catalysis strategy is proposed to promote the nitrogen reduction cycle through the cooperation of molecular complexes and co-catalysts, achieving N-H bond formation at a favorable applied potential.

Electrocatalytic Reduction of C-C π-Bonds via a Cobaltocene-Derived Concerted Proton-Electron Transfer Mediator: Fumarate Hydrogenation as a Model Study

Joseph Derosa et al.

Summary: Selective hydrogenation of fumarate esters via electrocatalytic CPET using cobaltocene with a tethered Bronsted base as a mediator is demonstrated in this study. High selectivity for electrocatalytic hydrogenation is observed only in the presence of the mediator, and mechanistic analysis reveals two distinct kinetic regimes based on substrate concentration.

Statistical analysis of C-H activation by oxo complexes supports diverse thermodynamic control over reactivity

Joseph E. Schneider et al.

Summary: Transition metal oxo species play a crucial role in activating strong C-H bonds. While various parameters have been proposed to determine their reactivity, only thermodynamic parameters are statistically significant in influencing their ability to mediate C-H activation. Notably, the oxidation potential and basicity of the oxo complexes also make independent and significant contributions, suggesting a more complex thermodynamic landscape than previously thought.
