Cage-size effects on the encapsulation of P2 by fullerenes

Enric Sabater et al.

Summary: The classic dichotomy between nitrogen and its heavier congeners is discussed in the context of encapsulation of phosphorus compounds in fullerene cages. Computational studies show that fullerene structures C-70 to C-100 can encapsulate P-2 molecules with intact triple bonds, excluding P-4. Thermodynamic analysis confirms the favorable nature of the encapsulation process.

An Organoplatinum(II) Metallacycle-Based Supramolecular Amphiphile and Its Application in Enzyme-Responsive Controlled Release

Bingbing Shi et al.

Summary: Enzyme-responsive nanomaterials have great potential for bioanalytical and biomedical applications, but the lack of compatible operation platforms limits their functionality. This study presents the design and synthesis of an organoplatinum(II) metallacycle that serves as a platform for enzyme-responsive supramolecular materials. The self-assembled nanosheets can transform into vesicles in the presence of beta-cyclodextrin, and demonstrate rare alpha-amylase responsiveness.

Composition-selective full inclusion host-guest interaction of azobenzene-containing photoresponsive nanoring with fullerene C60

Kun Yuan et al.

Summary: By using density functional theory calculations, the encapsulation capabilities of photoresponsive nanoring hosts containing azobenzen for fullerene C-60 were investigated. It was found that only the smallest nanoring host, host 5, could form a stable full inclusion complex with C-60. The interaction energies and analysis of orbital features provided evidence for the host-guest binding. The transfer of chemical activity and passivation of reactivity in the host-guest system were also discussed. The simulation of UV-vis-MR and H-1 NMR spectra of the complexes could aid in future experimental investigations.

Photoelectrochemical Response Enhancement for Metallofullerene-[12]Cycloparaphenylene Supramolecular Complexes

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: The photoelectrochemical properties of three metallofullerene-[12]cycloparaphenylene ([12]CPP) supramolecular complexes were studied, showing enhanced photocurrent responses compared to pristine metallofullerenes, indicating efficient photocurrent generation and promoted charge carrier transport caused by supramolecular interaction. The Sc2C2@C-82 and Sc2C2@C-82 subset of [12]CPP complexes exhibited the strongest photocurrents. Host-guest interaction was identified as the key factor promoting photocurrent enhancement.

Reply to the Correspondence on How Aromatic Are Molecular Nanorings? The Case of a Six-Porphyrin Nanoring

Irene Casademont-Reig et al.

Summary: This article challenges our conclusions on the aromaticity of a six-porphyrin nanoring linked by a butadiyne, based on experimental H-1-NMR data and calculations using the BLYP35 functional. The authors caution against relying solely on BLYP35 and argue that the indirect evidence of ring current from experimental H-1-NMR data is not a definitive proof of aromaticity.

Solvent-Dependent Supramolecular Host-Guest Assemblies of Platinum(II) Tweezers and a Guest System: From Discrete Molecules to High-Ordered Oligomers

Jenny Yuk-Wa Yeung et al.

Summary: A series of platinum(II) calix[4]arene-based molecular tweezers were synthesized, and their host-guest association with a charge-neutral cyclometalated platinum(II) complex was studied. The experiments showed that changing the solvent composition could control the assembly process, resulting in the formation of high-ordered host-guest oligomers. The change in assembly behaviors could be detected through drastic color changes.

Effect of Boron Doping on the Interlayer Spacing of Graphite

Chenguang Bao et al.

Summary: Boron-doped graphite with reduced interlayer spacing was successfully prepared by heat treatment using B4C powder as a catalyst. The increase in catalyst mass ratio resulted in a significant increase in substituted boron content and further reduction in interlayer spacing. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the effects of substitutional boron atoms on interlayer spacing may be attributed to pi electron transfer, increase in electrostatic surface potential, and Poisson contraction along the c-axis.

Theoretical study on the stabilities, electronic structures, and reaction and formation mechanisms of fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenes

Mengyang Li et al.

Summary: This article highlights the importance of theoretical study in fullerene chemistry, including its contributions to the understanding of fullerene structures, reaction mechanisms, and formation mechanisms. While experimental methods can characterize the geometries of fullerenes, theoretical study is necessary to investigate electronic structures and reaction mechanisms. With the development of theoretical level and computational efficiency, density functional theory combined with statistical thermodynamic analysis has successfully predicted stable isomers of fullerenes and provided insights into their formation processes. Theoretical predictions have also been validated by experimental results. The study of fullerene formation mechanisms, especially for endohedral fullerenes, is still limited by experimental conditions, making theoretical study crucial for advancing our understanding.
