Boosting oxygen evolution reaction of hierarchical spongy NiFe-PBA/Ni3C (B) electrocatalyst: Interfacial engineering with matchable structure

Xiaojing Lin et al.

Summary: This study proposes a hierarchical spongy electrocatalyst with an active interface between NiFe Prussian blue analogues and nickel carbides, which is formed by a borate-assisted strategy. The optimal electrocatalyst exhibits excellent water oxidation performance, attributed to the abundant adsorption sites and effective interfacial interaction. Computational simulations further confirm the favorable catalytic performance of the electrocatalyst by optimizing the electronic distribution and metal-3d orbitals at the interface.

Advanced Nickel-Based Catalysts for Urea Oxidation Reaction: Challenges and Developments

Yaming Ma et al.

Summary: The electrochemical urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is vital for urea-based energy conversion devices, but its performance is limited by the complexity of the six-electron transfer process. Developing efficient UOR catalysts is crucial, and nickel-based materials have been extensively studied and proven to be a suitable choice due to their high activity, easy modification, stable properties, and cost-effectiveness. Various techniques, such as alloying, doping, heterostructure construction, defect engineering, micro functionalization, and conductivity modulation, have been explored to produce highly efficient UOR catalysts. Reviewing the progress in this field promptly is important to inspire further studies.

Deciphering and Suppressing Over-Oxidized Nitrogen in Nickel-Catalyzed Urea Electrolysis

Jianan Li et al.

Summary: Urea electrolysis is a promising technology for simultaneous H-2 production and nitrogen suppression in water energy production. However, prevalent nickel-based catalysts may over-oxidize urea into NO2- products, posing potential environmental hazards. Through experiments and calculations, a nitrogen-fate network was derived, leading to the development of a polyaniline-coating strategy to increase N-2 production. These findings offer insights into nitrogen fate in water-energy systems.
