Widely tunable refractive index silicon nitride films deposited by ion-assisted pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering

Daoming You et al.

Summary: Silicon nitride films were deposited by ion-assisted pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering, and the regulation of power was found to affect the refractive index. By adjusting the ion source and target powers, the refractive index range was extended, and low extinction coefficients were obtained. The composition of the films varied with power, covering nitride-rich to silicon-rich. This study proposed a method for depositing silicon nitride films with a widely tunable refractive index range, which has potential applications in optical thin films and waveguides.

A Review of Photonic Systems-on-Chip Enabled by Widely Tunable Lasers

Larry A. Coldren et al.

Summary: Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) on indium phosphide have seen significant developments in the past decades, providing important functionalities in various system applications. The advantages of these PICs include the reduction in size, weight, and power consumption, as well as improved phase stability and reduced coupling losses among optical paths. In this paper, as part of a tribute to Prof. Daniel Dapkus, the focus is on monolithic PICs that incorporate and build on widely-tunable laser technology as a key element. The paper reviews early widely-tunable laser work, presents past system-on-a-chip developments as background, and provides a detailed review of recent system-on-a-chip advances by the author's groups, highlighting key advances.

Tuning silicon nitride refractive index through radio-frequency sputtering power

Daniela De Luca et al.

Summary: A simpler approach based on radio-frequency power modulation was proposed for the fabrication of thin-film multilayer structures, utilizing radio-frequency reactive sputtering to prepare silicon nitride (SiNx) thin films in an (Ar + N2) atmosphere at room temperature. Different deposition conditions were studied for their effects on the morphological and optical properties of the films in visible and near/mid-infrared regions, with variations in refractive index achieved by tuning sputtering power. The absence of spurious phases and the flat, homogeneous sample surfaces were confirmed through IR reflectance measurements, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.

Silicon Nitride and Hydrogenated Silicon Nitride Thin Films: A Review of Fabrication Methods and Applications

Nikolett Hegedus et al.

Summary: Silicon nitride (SiNx) and hydrogenated silicon nitride (SiNx:H) thin films are of widespread scientific interest due to their exceptional optical, mechanical, and thermal properties, making them versatile materials for industries such as solar, semiconductor, and coated glass production. Various deposition processes, such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), and emerging atomic layer deposition (ALD), have been used for fabricating these thin films, with each method having specific effects on the properties of the films.

Photon detection probability enhancement using an anti-reflection coating in CMOS-based SPADs

Seyed Saman Kohneh Poushi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the enhancement of photon detection probability (PDP) in CMOS single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) using an anti-reflection coating (ARC) above the sensitive area. The ARC layer not only improves optical transmission and eliminates standing wave penetration into the shallow region near the silicon surface where the multiplication region of the SPAD is located, but also provides insight into the selection of appropriate ARC thickness for maximum PDP enhancement at different wavelengths across the visible spectrum if different ARC thicknesses are available within the CMOS process.
