Effects of helminths on the human immune response and the microbiome

P'ng Loke et al.

Summary: Helminths have developed immune regulatory mechanisms to avoid host rejection, but our understanding of human immune response to these parasites is limited. Recent studies on individuals infected with helminths have improved our understanding of human type 2 immunity and its effects on the microbiome. Challenges in studying human helminth infections, such as heterogeneity of responses and limited access to tissue samples, also provide opportunities for advancing human immunology. Organoids and single-cell sequencing are promising tools for immunological analysis. This research may uncover mechanisms that can be used for therapeutic purposes.

Tissue-specific immunity in helminth infections

Francesco Vacca et al.

Summary: Host responses to helminth infections involve Type 2 immune responses that are crucial for immunity, tissue repair, and parasite tolerance. These responses are also observed in the tissue-associated immune-pathologies of asthma, atopic dermatitis, and allergies. Recent discoveries of new immune cells and cytokine pathways offer insights into tissue specific immunity against helminths and how the host accommodates their presence.

Adherence to Inflammatory Bowel Disease Medications in Southern New Zealand

Kristina Aluzaite et al.

Summary: This study investigated medication adherence and associated risk factors in IBD patients in Otago, New Zealand. Findings showed that a third of patients had below medium medication adherence, with older age being positively associated with adherence. Discrepancies were found between self-reported and tool-assessed medication adherence scores with over one-third of patients underestimating or overestimating their adherence.

Does the epithelial barrier hypothesis explain the increase in allergy, autoimmunity and other chronic conditions?

Cezmi A. Akdis

Summary: The increase in allergic, autoimmune, and chronic diseases may be related to epithelial barrier-damaging agents associated with industrialization, urbanization, and modern life. These diseases are more prevalent in industrialized countries and are on the rise in developing countries, affecting over one billion people globally.
