Label-free multimodal imaging of infected Galleria mellonella larvae

Elsie Quansah et al.

Summary: This study is the first to utilize multimodal imaging techniques to analyze infection-related changes in the Galleria mellonella infection model. Through various imaging modalities, the researchers were able to visualize tissue damage caused by bacterial infection and the defense mechanisms of insects against microbial pathogens. Additionally, the imaging techniques were used to analyze biofilm infections associated with medical implants.

Dissecting the invasion of Galleria mellonella by Yersinia enterocolitica reveals metabolic adaptations and a role of a phage lysis cassette in insect killing

Philipp-Albert Saenger et al.

Summary: This study investigated the infection and killing process of the human pathogen Yersinia enterocolitica strain W22703 on Greater wax moth larvae. The results showed that strain W22703 is highly toxic to the larvae and can proliferate rapidly within a short time. The infection process involves colonization of the midgut, invasion of the hemolymph, and induction of morphological changes in hemocytes.

The Clinical View on Streptococcus anginosus Group - Opportunistic Pathogens Coming Out of Hiding

Magdalena Pilarczyk-Zurek et al.

Summary: Three distinct species of streptococcal, known as Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus intermedius, and Streptococcus constellatus, have gained attention from clinicians and microbiologists as opportunistic pathogens. Their pathogenicity has been underestimated, but recent reports highlight their emergence as life-threatening infections. This review summarizes clinical reports and highlights the importance of accurate microbiological diagnostics for effective treatment.

The distribution of cultivable oral anaerobic microbiota identified by MALDI-TOF MS in healthy subjects and in patients with periodontal disease

Yu-Shan Wei et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify cultivatable anaerobic bacteria in the oral cavity using MALDI-TOF Biotyper. The findings revealed higher abundance of certain bacteria in periodontal patients compared to healthy controls, and showed associations between bacterial distribution changes and periodontal disease progression, aging, and basic treatment.

Innate Immune Responses of Galleria mellonella to Mycobacterium bovis BCG Challenge Identified Using Proteomic and Molecular Approaches

Masanori Asai et al.

Summary: The study used the larvae of G. mellonella as a non-mammalian infection model for the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, characterizing the immune response through proteomic and transcriptomic approaches. The results showed distinct changes in the proteome at different time points post-infection, with inconsistencies between gene expression and protein abundance. Insights into the innate immune response and potential antimycobacterial agents were gained, validating the insect model as a cost-effective and ethically acceptable tool for studying MTBC members.

Evaluation of the Anti-Shigellosis Activity of Dietary Isothiocyanates in Galleria mellonella Larvae

Dariusz Nowicki et al.

Summary: Cruciferous vegetables are a rich source of organosulfur compounds that have proven health benefits. Isothiocyanate derivatives, such as SFN and PEITC, have shown effective antibacterial potency against Shigella dysenteriae, negatively regulating the expression of the stx gene. This suggests that isothiocyanates can be effectively used to combat dangerous bacterial infections.

Mutant resources for functional genomics in Dictyostelium discoideum using REMI-seq technology

Nicole Gruenheit et al.

Summary: In this study, REMI-seq, an adaptation of Tn-seq, is described as a powerful tool for high throughput gene function analysis in the model system Dictyostelium discoideum. The method allows quantitative identification of genomic insertion sites of a drug resistance marker, enabling efficient linkage between genotype and phenotype. The resources developed using REMI-seq, including a near genome-wide resource of individual mutants and a defined pool of 'barcoded' mutants, facilitate rapid identification of novel regulators of cellular processes.

In vivo transcriptome analysis provides insights into host-dependent expression of virulence factors by Yersinia entomophaga MH96, during infection of Galleria mellonella

Amber R. Paulson et al.

Summary: Analysis of the in vivo transcriptome of the entomopathogenic bacterium Yersinia entomophaga MH96 during infection in Galleria mellonella revealed upregulation of multiple toxin and adhesin genes, as well as the expression of genes encoding type III and VI secretion system-associated effectors. These findings provide insight into the pathobiology of MH96 and support efforts to identify novel insecticidal agents.
