From bench scale to pilot plant: A 150x scaled-up configuration of a microwave-driven structured reactor for methane dehydroaromatization

I Julian et al.

Summary: Microwave-assisted gas-phase conversion on structured catalysts is a promising technology in heterogeneous catalysis, capable of avoiding non-selective gas-phase reactions. Scaling-up from laboratory to a stable operation with a 150-fold higher feeding rate has potential, but main obstacles include catalyst deactivation and the design of microwave cavity. Energy consumption and scaling factor show non-linearity, highlighting the importance of microwave cavity design.

Kinetic study of multiphase reactions under microwave irradiation: A mini-review

Kazem Adavi et al.

Summary: Microwave heating is a rapid, selective, and volumetric non-conventional heating approach that has a significant impact on driving chemical reactions. The effect of microwave irradiation on thermal/catalytic reaction kinetics is still a topic of debate. While some researchers believe that microwave heating affects reaction kinetics through non-thermal effects in addition to thermal effects, others attribute the observations solely to the thermal effect. This study summarizes and critically synthesizes available information in the literature on this subject, concluding that microwave heating only has a thermal effect on gas-solid reactions but can have non-thermal effects on ionic liquid-solid reactions. Discrepancies in previous studies are primarily caused by limitations in temperature measurement, physical structure variations, and non-uniform temperature distribution.

Microwave-assisted ammonia synthesis over Ru/MgO catalysts at ambient pressure

Christina Wildfire et al.

Summary: In this study, microwave synthesis of ammonia over Ru/MgO catalysts was conducted at 320℃ under ambient pressure with different Ru loading levels. Higher Ru loading showed better dispersion, leading to decreased sintering and enhanced activity and stability. The microwave reactor also offered faster catalyst recovery compared to traditional thermal convectional Haber Bosch (HB) technology.

Ultracompact methane steam reforming reactor based on microwaves susceptible structured catalysts for distributed hydrogen production

Eugenio Meloni et al.

Summary: Hydrogen as a green energy source can be produced through methane steam reforming, but traditional methods have limitations in terms of efficiency and cost. Microwave heating could overcome these limitations by efficiently transferring heat to the catalyst, resulting in faster reactions and higher energy efficiency. Initial tests showed promising results, with the system reaching high temperatures and methane conversion rates close to thermodynamic equilibrium values. Future studies will focus on optimizing the microwave reactor to further increase energy efficiency and improve CH4 conversion rates for enhanced hydrogen production.

Temperature Homogeneity under Selective and Localized Microwave Heating in Structured Flow Reactors

Abhinav Malhotra et al.

Summary: Research into selectively heating different phases of multiphase systems using microwaves reveals a lack of understanding of materials properties and operating conditions that maximize temperature gradients. Computational fluid dynamics calculations and temperature measurements in structured flow reactors were used to assess temperature differences and develop a model for estimating temperature gradients. Localized heating in structured beds is found to enhance selectivity under certain conditions.

The influence of microwave treatment on the mode I fracture toughness of granite

Zhenlong Ge et al.

Summary: Microwave assisted mechanical rock breaking, a hybrid method using microwave heating and mechanical rock breaking, has potential applications in various fields. Research shows that under microwave irradiation, the fracture toughness and fracture energy of granite decrease with temperature increase. Thermal damage to the rock is mainly caused by the expansion of medium absorbers heated by microwaves.
