Novel cryogenic carbon dioxide capture and storage process using LNG cold energy in a natural gas combined cycle power plant

Yurim Kim et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new cryogenic CO2 capture and storage (CCS) process using liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy in a natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) power plant. The study makes two major contributions: first, it effectively reduces the efficiency penalty in NGCC power plants by solving the fundamental problems associated with the conventional CCS process. Second, the cryogenic CCS process requires minimal equipment installation in the NGCC power plant. The proposed cryogenic CCS process reduces the efficiency penalty from 14.34% to 3.51%, with a 99.93% CO2 capture rate. We believe this study will provide a novel guideline for reducing the efficiency penalty by overcoming the challenges of the conventional CCS process.

Energy and exergy assessment and a competitive study of a two-stage ORC for recovering SFGC waste heat and LNG cold energy

Yashar Aryanfar et al.

Summary: This paper investigates, simulates, and analyzes three functional modes of a newly designed geothermal power plant: single flash geothermal cycle (SFGC), SFGC with two-stage ORC recovery, and SFGC with two-stage ORC recovery and LNG cryogenic energy. By adding a two-stage ORC recovery and LNG refrigeration exergy cycle, the aim is to improve the thermal efficiency and exergy efficiency of the SFGC system and utilize LNG's cold energy. The proposed system is analyzed using the equations of the first law and the second law of thermodynamics. Assuming a two-stage ORC and LNG recovery mode, the energy efficiency of the SFGC increases from 0.2023 to 0.3863 when using R227ea and R116 working fluids, and from 0.4016 to 0.4066 when using R124 and R125 working fluids.

Energy, exergy, and economic (3E) analysis of an organic Rankine cycle using zeotropic mixtures based on marine engine waste heat and LNG cold energy

Zhen Tian et al.

Summary: This paper conducts a simulation to compare the thermo-economic performances of zeotropic mixtures and pure fluids in a parallel two-stage organic Rankine cycle (PTORC) driven by waste heat from LNG-fueled ships. The results indicate that zeotropic mixtures do not always have an advantage over pure fluids, with the optimal working fluid combination being R170/R1270-R600. The study also shows that the highest net power output is achieved with R1150-R600a, and LNG regasification should occur in the first-stage condenser for optimal performance.

Summary: This study proposes a novel ATR process that integrates ASU and LNG regasification to utilize cold energy as an operating utility for hydrogen production, resulting in improved overall efficiency. Optimal performance of the system with a feed stream of 827.5 kmol/h LNG produces 2508.0 kmol/h of hydrogen gas with a purity of 99.2%, reducing exergy destruction by 18.6% and achieving an exergy efficiency approximately 25.4% higher than that of the SMR process. An economic evaluation using net present value (NPV) shows the proposed system has a NPV of 338.9 million USD, which is 72.6% higher than hydrogen production with the SMR process from LNG.
