Design and Simulation of a Plastic Waste to Methanol Process: Yields and Economics

Kristiano Prifti et al.

Summary: Plastic waste treatment is crucial for circular economic models and the energy transition, and this work aims to address the lack of chemical valorization methods for low quality plastic waste with high impurity content. The proposed solution involves converting plastic waste to methanol through gasification, with thermodynamic characterization and kinetic modeling used to simulate the process. Different proportions of polystyrene in a polypropylene/polyethylene mixture are tested to evaluate the process behavior for feedstock with low hydrogen content. The performance of the process is assessed for each type of feedstock, and the operational expenditures, net present value, and internal rate of return are calculated for different plant capacities.

Mechanical Recycling of Packaging Plastics: A Review

Zoe O. G. Schyns et al.

Summary: The current global plastics economy is linear, but transitioning to a circular economy is crucial for reducing environmental impacts through degradation, reuse, and recycling. Mechanical recycling plays a key role in a sustainable plastic economy, but challenges such as high costs, mechanical property degradation, and inconsistent product quality need to be addressed.

Century of Technology Trends in Methanol Synthesis: Any Need for Kinetics Refitting?

Filippo Bisotti et al.

Summary: Methanol has gained increasing attention due to its variety of feedstocks and low environmental impact, playing a key role in future economic roadmaps. Biogas is a promising alternative source for syngas production, allowing for less stringent operating conditions and smaller plant scales. The widely used kinetic models for methanol synthesis may not fully characterize these conditions, with a robust refit showing improved performance and better alignment with recent process trends.
