Spreading of point-source liquid spills in a thin rectangular packed bed under simulated marine conditions

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: This study visualized the liquid spills in porous media under marine oscillations and investigated the effects of liquid gravity and moving-bed inertial forces on the spills. The results showed that gravity force oscillations had a significant impact on the spill morphology, while other forces played secondary roles. The branching of liquid spills under gravity not only enhanced wetting but also symmetrized the spills and reduced the wall-biased liquid influx.

Mitigation of Ship Emissions: Overview of Recent Trends

Ali-Akbar Sarbanha et al.

Summary: The urgency of reducing flue gas pollution in maritime transport necessitates a comprehensive approach to assess sustainability and environmental impacts. Marinized gas scrubbers, which can be retrofitted to existing ships, are crucial in reducing ship exhaust emissions and countering the use of expensive low-sulfur fuels. However, the growing priority of reducing greenhouse gas emissions poses new challenges for emissions compliance. This study critically reviews different types of scrubbers, potential risks of secondary emissions, and recent efforts in reducing NOX and CO2 emissions through onboard carbon capture systems and alternative fuel combustion.

Effect of inter-particle forces on solids mixing in fluidized beds

Fatemeh Tashakori-Asfestani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of four inter-particle forces on particle mixing in a fluidized bed. Each force's impact on axial mixing of particles was examined and compared to a bed without inter-particle force. The results showed that hydrogen bond force had the most significant influence on bubble size and particle mixing. The presence of inter-particle force increased the bubble phase fraction and diffusivity due to the formation of larger bubbles. The Ashton mixing index was evaluated, indicating that while diffusivity was higher with inter-particle force, mixing time was longer due to slower mixing at the particle scale.

Numerical investigation on fluidization characteristics of binary particles in supercritical water fluidized bed reactor under pulsed conditions

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the fluidization properties of binary particles in a supercritical water fluidized bed reactor using coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics-Discrete Element Method simulations. The results show that introducing external energy pulses can effectively promote the mixing of binary particles, with low frequency pulses being more effective than high frequency pulses. The study also proposes an efficient method based on Fast Fourier Transform to determine the optimal pulse frequency.

Overall particles flow pattern in a two-zone gas- solid fluidized bed with a secondary-gas stream

M. Jahandar Lashaki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the particle flow patterns and the impact of the secondary gas nozzle location in a two-zone pseudo-2D fluidized bed with lateral gas injection. At low excess gas flow rates, particles moved downward at the bed center and upward near the walls when the nozzle was in the middle, while the reverse movement trend was observed when the nozzle was at the top. At higher gas velocities, particles moved upward at the bed center and downward near the walls for both nozzle locations. The presence of the nozzle in the middle reduced the formation of large bubbles.

Dynamic control method of particle distribution uniformity in the rolling circulating fluidized bed (RCFB)

Tong Zhao et al.

Summary: The paper proposed a dynamic control method for particle distribution uniformity in a rolling circulating fluidized bed (RCFB) by using an air distribution plate. A two-fluid flow model was used to simulate multiphase flow behaviors within the RCFB. Different tilt angles and inclined angles were tested to determine the impact on particle distribution behaviors. The study found that adjusting the inclined angle of the air distribution plate could alleviate uneven particle distribution, regardless of changes in the tilt angle of the RCFB.

Influence of Stokes number on the particle phase distribution behaviors in a rolling circulating fluidized beds (RCFB)

Pengwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the three-dimensional modeling of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) and its potential in energy saving and emissions purification for large diesel engines, using a rolling function to simulate the unsteady working conditions of rolling circulation fluidized bed (RCFB). A two-fluid model based on Euler-Euler approach was utilized to numerically simulate gas-solid two phases flow within RCFB, exploring the effect of Stokes number on particle phase distribution behaviors. The reliability of quantitative modeling was verified based on experimental results, and the influence of Stokes number on particle radial distribution as well as the relationship between distribution uniformity and particle size were obtained.

A green maritime shift: Lessons from the electrification of ferries in Norway

Simen Rostad Saether et al.

Summary: Norway is leading the way in the transition towards cleaner solutions in the maritime sector, with a successful implementation of electric and hybrid-electric ferries. The political acceleration of transitions was facilitated by factors such as the establishment of the Norwegian ferry innovation system, government support in market development, and a lack of strong opposing vested interests.

Environmental protection and energy efficiency improvement by using natural gas fuel in maritime transportation

Ahmed G. Elkafas et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the potential environmental and energy efficiency effects of using natural gas in dual-fuel engines on ships. The results show significant reductions in CO2, NOx, and SOx emissions when compared to using diesel engines, meeting the IMO regulations. Additionally, the Energy Efficiency Design Index value is lower with dual-fuel engines, aligning with IMO recommendations for energy efficiency improvements.
