Taming Solvent-Solute Interaction Accelerates Interfacial Kinetics in Low-Temperature Lithium-Metal Batteries

Cheng-Bin Jin et al.

Summary: Lithium (Li)-metal batteries suffer severe capacity deterioration at extreme temperatures due to increased kinetic barrier of interfacial processes. This study quantitatively probes the interfacial kinetics in three different electrolytes and reveals that desolvation is the limiting step dominating the cell impedance and capacity at low temperature. The use of a 1,3-dioxolane-based electrolyte with tamed solvent-solute interaction facilitates fast desolvation and enables practical Li|LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cells at -40 degrees C to retain 66% of room-temperature capacity and withstand fast charging rates. The barrier of desolvation dictated by solvent-solute interaction environments is quantitatively uncovered, and regulating this interaction emerges as a promising solution to low-temperature batteries.

Weak Solvent-Solvent Interaction Enables High Stability of Battery Electrolyte

Yuqi Wang et al.

Summary: We detected the presence of weak solvent-solvent interactions in electrolytes using nuclear magnetic resonance and found that these interactions play a significant role in stabilizing the electrolytes, which is a novel discovery. By studying the role of ethylene carbonate (EC) solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolyte, we found that EC can stabilize linear carbonate solvent electrolyte, particularly diethyl carbonate (DEC), through weak intermolecular interactions, enhancing the energy difference between the orbitals of the Li+(EC)(x)(DEC)(y) complex and demonstrating strong capability against reduction. Our findings were further confirmed in other metal ion batteries (e.g., Na+, K+), highlighting the importance of electrolyte design and deeper understanding of battery performance.

Identification of LiH and nanocrystalline LiF in the solid-electrolyte interphase of lithium metal anodes

Zulipiya Shadike et al.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) composition is crucial for developing high-energy batteries based on lithium metal anodes. This study used synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis to identify and differentiate two elusive components, LiH and LiF, in the SEI of lithium metal anodes. The presence of LiH in the SEI was confirmed, with discussion on the possibility of its misidentification as LiF in the literature. The study also found that LiF in the SEI has different structural features from LiF in the bulk phase, which favor Li+ transport and make it a favored component for the SEI.

Theoretical Investigation of the Na+ Transport Mechanism and the Performance of Ionic Liquid-Based Electrolytes in Sodium-Ion Batteries

Tuanan C. Lourenco et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids show promise as a substitute for common organic electrolytes in sodium-ion batteries due to their unique physical and chemical properties. A theoretical investigation combining classical molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations was conducted on 25 different ionic liquids, revealing that aggregation of Na+ ions is caused by interactions with anions and leads to improved Na+ transport. Additionally, the electrochemical windows of these systems were estimated to exceed 4.0 eV, indicating their potential for electrolyte applications.

Summary: Our study reveals that the Gen2 electrolyte, with a mixture of cyclic and linear carbonates, has a lower ion dissociation rate and faster Li+ self-diffusion rate compared to the EC-base electrolyte. Additionally, the addition of up to 25% FEC in electrolytes coordinates with Li+, preferentially reducing it to help passivate the anode and improve the solid electrolyte interphase.

Summary: The energy density of LIBs has been increased threefold since their introduction, but the capacity of transition metal oxide cathodes is approaching its limit due to stability limitations of electrolytes. To further enhance energy density, new high-capacity and high-voltage cathode materials need to be explored, and graphite anodes may need to be replaced. One of the main challenges for future development is the development of new electrolyte compositions that can accommodate high-voltage cathodes and anodes while ensuring the stability of the batteries.
