Integrating H2O2 generation from electrochemical oxygen reduction with the selective oxidation of organics in a dual-membrane reactor

Hongliang Zhang et al.

Summary: The electrochemical reduction of oxygen to produce hydrogen peroxide can replace the current anthraquinone process. However, the concentration, transportation, and storage of hydrogen peroxide increases both the cost and safety risks. A method was reported to couple the electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide with its in situ application in the selective oxidation of organics, achieving high selectivity and Faradaic efficiency under optimized conditions. This method is also feasible for various other organic oxidation reactions with high selectivity and efficiency, and achieved an overall Faradaic efficiency of 132.79% in the paired oxidation of furfural to furoic acid.

Enhanced refractory organics removal by •OH and 1O2 generated in an electro-oxidation system with cathodic Fenton-like reaction

Chao Qu et al.

Summary: In this study, MnO2 was introduced into the cathodic catalyst layer for in-situ H2O2 decomposition to generate active oxidation species. The ORR-EO system with MnO2/CNTs-C/PTFE air-cathode and Ti/NATO anode successfully eliminated organic carbon in the effluent and saved energy.

A novel trickle bed electrochemical reactor design for efficient hydrogen peroxide production

Hamdan Y. Hamdan et al.

Summary: A specific electrochemical reactor combining gas diffusion electrode with trickling flow property is designed for intensive H2O2 production. The reactor allows uniform distribution of oxygen gas all over the cathode bed, avoiding transport limitations and electrode limited area. The highest concentration of H2O2 achieved was 46.56 mM, and the power consumption was estimated to be 4 kWh/kg, showing economic benefits.

Phenol Deterioration in Refinery Wastewater through Advanced Electrochemical Oxidation Reactions Using Different Carbon Fiber and Graphite Electrodes Configurations

Rowaida N. Abbas et al.

Summary: The study investigated the electrochemical treatment of phenolic wastewater using different electrode arrangements, finding that graphite-graphite cells were most effective for direct and indirect removal of phenol, while a graphite anode and carbon fiber cathode cell was most efficient in using the electro-Fenton process for removal. The results indicated that the phenol removal reactions followed first-order kinetics, with the electro-Fenton process in a graphite-anode/carbon-fiber-cathode cell showing faster reaction rates compared to other processes and cells.

Electrochemical oxidation of phenols in flow: a versatile and scalable access to para-benzoquinones

Fiona Sprang et al.

Summary: A novel and scalable protocol for synthesizing para-benzoquinones from inexpensive phenols has been reported. This protocol eliminates the need for catalysts, mediators, or terminal chemical oxidizers, significantly reducing waste production. Electricity is utilized as a sustainable and reagent-free oxidant, resulting in excellent selectivity. The effect of protic additives on the oxidation process has been studied and utilized to optimize the reaction outcome. Additionally, a flow protocol has been developed, allowing for continuous production under mild, ambient conditions. The method has been demonstrated to be versatile, with yields up to 99% in 26 examples, and has shown scalability on a gram-scale without corrosion.
