New insights into the structure of membrane fouling by biomolecules using comparison with isotherms and ATR-FTIR local quantification

Sepideh Habibi et al.

Summary: The objective of this paper is to propose a deeper analysis of microfiltration membrane fouling by studying the accumulation of two biomolecules. The findings show that the same quantity of accumulated biomolecules can result in different flux decline due to different fouling mechanisms. Glutathione can adsorb throughout the porous media of the membrane, while Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) forms a dense irreversible fouling. The research method provides a better understanding of the membrane fouling caused by soft matter.

Characterizing membrane fouling formation during ultrafiltration of high-salinity organic wastewater

Weiwei Cai et al.

Summary: The study found that high concentrations of Na+ in high-salinity wastewater were beneficial for ultrafiltration of bovine serum albumin solution, but posed adverse effects on ultrafiltration of humic acid solution, while the addition of Ca2+ or Al3+ exacerbated fouling of bovine serum albumin. Additionally, membrane rejection decreased significantly in the presence of various salts.

Henry J. Tanudjaja et al.

Summary: This study utilizes random forest and neural network to predict the critical flux of oil-in-water emulsions in crossflow microfiltration. The results suggest that crossflow velocity is the most dominant parameter, although casein concentration can also have an impact. Machine learning tools can enhance the understanding and prediction of critical flux.

Performance study of fouling resistant novel ultrafiltration membranes based on the blends of poly (ether ether sulfone)/poly (vinyl pyrrolidone)/nano-titania for the separation of humic acid, dyes and biological macromolecular proteins from aqueous solutions

Jenet George et al.

Summary: The ultrafiltration membrane made of PEES/PVP/n-TiO2 demonstrated higher hydrophilicity and fouling resistance, effectively removing various organic compounds from aqueous solution. By adding PVP, the membrane pure water flux was significantly improved, with the membrane containing 5% PVP being recommended as optimal.

Dopamine-triggered one-step codeposition of zwitterionic surfactants for anti-fouling polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane modification

Zheng Nie et al.

Summary: This study reports a membrane modification strategy using polydopamine and a zwitterionic surfactant to enhance the anti-fouling properties of a polyethersulfone membrane. The modified membrane showed significantly reduced flux decline and fouling resistance compared to the pristine membrane. The optimal anti-fouling performance was achieved when the concentration of the zwitterionic surfactant was low.

Summary: A facile modification strategy using PDA and SB3-14 was reported to enhance the anti-fouling properties of a PES membrane. The modified membranes showed improved anti-fouling performance without compromising transport properties, with the optimal results observed for membranes modified with low SB3-14 concentration. The presence of SB3-14 significantly decreased Lewis acid-base energy during fouling construction.

Fast versus turbulent fluidization of Geldart Group B particles

Jia Wei Chew et al.

Summary: Both fast and turbulent fluidized beds exhibit entrainment, but the differences in flow phenomena are not well understood. Turbulent beds have higher cluster probability and frequency, lower local mass flux, and similar segregation extents compared to fast fluidized beds. Variables affecting cluster probability and frequency are similar for both regimes, but differences exist in terms of their influence on probability. Particle-related properties are more dominant in the turbulent bed in terms of overall mass flux. Radial position has the most influence in fast fluidized beds, but the least in turbulent beds in terms of segregation.

Why Should Tryptones Rather Than Bovine Serum Albumin Be Used as Model Proteins to Explore the Interactions between Proteins and Pollutants in Environments?

Bo Gong et al.

Summary: The study indicates that environmental protein-like substances are more similar to tryptones than to the model protein, BSA. They have more aromatic groups and are less stable, and do not tend to aggregate after binding to metal ions or HA. These results suggest that tryptones may be a more suitable alternative model for investigating protein-pollutant interactions than BSA.
