Effect of impeller type and scale-up on spatial distribution of shear rate in a stirred tank

Huina Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents the main spatial distribution features of shear rate in a stirred tank operated with five different radial and axial flow impellers using particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments. The average shear rate in the whole tank and the local value near the impeller both increase linearly with impeller speed. The shear coefficient at the impeller outlet is linearly related to the impeller flow number and decreases with the increase of impeller flow number at constant power consumption per unit volume. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results show that the volume-averaged shear rate decreases faster for a Reactor Design for Tolerance (RDT) impeller compared to other impellers with the same impeller tip velocity during scale-up based on constant power consumption per unit volume and geometric similarity. The novel multi-blade combined (MBC) impeller with an increased height-to-diameter ratio improves the distribution uniformity of shear rate at the same power consumption per unit volume after scale-up. These studies provide a data basis for selecting impeller types and improving the shear rate environment in large-scale stirred tanks.

Influence of viscosity on gas holdup formation in stirred tank reactors

Tomas Kracik et al.

Summary: Mechanically agitated vessels serving as gas-liquid stirred tank reactors are commonly used in the global chemical, biochemical, pharmaceutical, and food industry, with gas flow increasing liquid level and gas holdup being a key characteristic influenced by vessel and impeller geometry, operational conditions, and chemical properties. This work focuses on the viscosity influence on gas holdup formation in laboratory and pilot plant stirred tank reactors at a wide range of experimental conditions, testing the impact of gas flow rate, impeller type, impeller diameter, batch viscosity, and other operational conditions. Broad experimental conditions were used to establish chemical engineering correlations for design and scale up.

An effectiveness factor model for slurry phase olefin polymerizations

Shuaifeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The multigrain model (MGM) is commonly used for olefin polymerization research, but its detailed modeling of intraparticle transport is not suitable for multiphase CFD simulations. To address this issue, the effectiveness factor model (EFM) is developed based on the MGM, which can be used in multiphase CFD simulations. The EFM is validated and compared with the MGM, showing similar results with lower computation cost for olefin slurry polymerization when alpha(i,mp) < 2.0.

CFD simulation of flow and mixing characteristics in a stirred tank agitated by improved disc turbines

Zhuotai Jia et al.

Summary: In order to reduce power consumption and improve mixing performance in stirred tanks, two improved disc turbines were developed and studied using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results showed that the improved turbines had lower power consumption and higher pumping efficiency compared to traditional turbines, and their mixing performance was superior to other types of turbines under the same power consumption.

The effect of baffle on flow structures and dynamics stirred by pitch blade turbine

Ying Fan et al.

Summary: The experimental results indicate that in an unbaffled tank, an independent circulation area forms under the impeller, while the addition of a baffle enhances axial discharge of fluid and alters flow structures, leading to better diffusion and mixing in the whole stirred tank.
