Impact of reducing conditions on the stabilization of Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2O high-entropy oxide

Yong Lin et al.

Summary: The entropy stabilization effect has increased the diversity of inorganic compounds, but the relationship between processing conditions, properties, and microstructure is still poorly understood. This study evaluated the impact of spark plasma sintering on stabilizing a high entropy oxide and found that it significantly reduced the required stabilization temperature. The findings suggest a strong correlation between processing atmosphere, interfacial resistance, and volumetric capacity of high entropy anode materials.

Production of functionalized graphitic carbon materials via solvent-free mechanochemical method for supercapacitors and water treatment

Yingying Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a facile and solvent-free mechanochemical method was developed to produce large-surface-area functional graphitized carbon materials (GCMs) with sp-hybridized carbon atoms and rich porosity. The resulting GCMs showed high capacitance as a supercapacitor electrode and excellent adsorbance for heavy metal removal. The unique porosity and electron/ion transport properties of GCMs, attributed to the alkynyl carbon in calcium carbide, make them of potential application in energy storage and water treatment.

Synergistic effect of binary Co and Ni cations in hydrotalcite-derived Co2-xNixAlO catalysts for promoting soot combustion

Yilin Zhang et al.

Summary: The presence of unsaturated cations in hydrotalcite-derived CoAl oxides is crucial for improving catalytic performance during soot combustion. By partially replacing cobalt with nickel in hydrotalcite-derived CoAl oxides, the surface area and active sites can be increased, leading to improved adsorption-activation properties for O-2 and NO. The synergistic effect of binary Co and Ni ions in hydrotalcite-derived Co2-xNixAlO catalysts greatly enhances catalytic activity for soot combustion.

Influence of Nb2O5 crystal structure on photocatalytic efficiency

Catia L. Ucker et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the use of crystalline Nb2O5 powders with different phases as photocatalysts for Rhodamine B degradation, showing that changes in crystalline structure and surface area due to heat treatment temperature can impact the photocatalytic activity. Different phases of Nb2O5 resulted in varying degrees of RhB degradation, with pseudohexagonal Nb2O5 achieving a higher degradation rate compared to orthorhombic Nb2O5. Analysis methods including high-performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and total organic content analysis were used to identify RhB degradation products and propose potential degradation pathways.

First-principles calculation of lattice distortions in four single phase high entropy alloys with experimental validation

Saro San et al.

Summary: A comparative study of high entropy alloys using ab initio calculations reveals intricate interdependence among electronic structure, interatomic bonding, partial charge distribution, and mechanical properties. The novel parameter of total bond order density (TBOD) is used to interpret the properties, with highest TBOD found in Cantor alloy NiFeCoCrMn. Experimental validation shows lattice distortions in NiFeCoCrMn and NiFeCoCrPd based on atomic radii variations. Modeling of Cu and Pd clustering in the supercell demonstrates lower total energy, consistent with observed enhancements in Cu and Pd-induced concentration wave in HEAs.
