Bioinspired Knee Joint of a Lower-Limb Exoskeleton for Misalignment Reduction

Taeyeon Kim et al.

Summary: This article proposes a knee joint mechanism that closely imitates the motion of the human knee joint using curved guide rail and bearings. The shape of the guide rail is optimized to accurately imitate human motion. An experimental method is introduced to quantitatively evaluate misalignment, and the interference of the mechanism with human walking motion is verified.

Adaptive neural fuzzy reasoning method for recognizing human movement gait phase

Jiyuan Song et al.

Summary: In response to the demand for real-time and accurate detection of human gait phase for lower limb exoskeleton, this study focuses on the movement of the human foot and explores a human gait phase division method based on human kinematics and dynamics information. A wearable foot gait analysis system based on inertial sensors and pressure sensors is proposed, and a human gait phase recognition method based on plantar acceleration and plantar pressure information is studied. The experimental results demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method.

Design Principles for Compact, Backdrivable Actuation in Partial-Assist Powered Knee Orthoses

Hanqi Zhu et al.

Summary: This article introduces a backdrivable powered knee orthosis designed to assist lower-limb musculature for individuals with musculoskeletal disorders. The design prioritizes backdrivability, output torque, and compactness, achieving reduced backdrive torque by increasing motor diameter and reducing gear ratio. Custom brushless dc motor with encapsulated windings and 7:1 planetary gearset design further optimize size, weight, and torque density for improved functionality in daily activities. Human subject experiments demonstrate reduced muscle activation and minimal acoustic noise during various movements with the orthosis assistance.

Self-Aligning Mechanism Improves Comfort and Performance With a Powered Knee Exoskeleton

Sergei V. Sarkisian et al.

Summary: Misalignments between powered exoskeleton joints and the user's anatomical joints are inevitable, but self-aligning mechanisms have been shown to improve user comfort and performance. Experimental evidence demonstrates up to 15.3% increased comfort and 38% improved performance when using a self-aligning mechanism in a powered knee exoskeleton. Additionally, spurious forces and torques were reduced by up to 97% with the self-aligning mechanism unlocked.
