Shake and Take: Fast Transformation of an Origami Gripper

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: Origami structures can transform their form and function by changing the direction of their folds, enabling multifunctional robots. The origami gripper presented in this article can dynamically change its kinematic behavior in less than a second, demonstrating predictable and repeatable transformation for different designs and orientations. With sufficient stiffness, it is capable of quickly reconfiguring between multiple grasping modes and picking up objects with distinct geometries, showing the potential for complex and functional machines.

Tuning the grasping strength of soft actuators with magnetic elastomer fingertips

Nicholas Bira et al.

Summary: This paper presents an approach that uses multifunctional materials to increase the grip strength of soft grippers while maintaining gripper compliance. The use of magnetic elastomers (MEs), which are elastomeric fingertips embedded with magnetic particles, enhances the grasping strength and influences actuation trajectories in soft robotic actuators when coupled with external magnets. The study characterizes various ME compositions and demonstrates specific applications where MEs expand upon soft robotic actuation methods.

Variable Stiffness Robotic Hand Driven by Twisted-Coiled Polymer Actuators

Tuan Luong et al.

Summary: This letter proposes a variable stiffness robotic hand driven by twisted-coiled polymer actuators (TCAs) connected in series with a servomotor to improve actuation speed. By using the servomotor, the rise time and settling time in set-point regulation control were significantly improved compared with using TCAs only. The hand's stiffness can be changed by varying the temperature of the TCAs, controlled by applying model predictive control (MPC) and active cooling. The hand can grasp a load of 80 g and achieve a 5-fold variable stiffness.

High-load capacity origami transformable wheel

Dae-Young Lee et al.

Summary: Composite membrane origami is an efficient method for constructing transformable mechanisms, but its limited load-bearing capability has restricted its application potential. A transformable wheel based on membrane origami capable of bearing more than a 10-kilonewton load has been developed by adopting a thick membrane as an essential element and introducing a wireframe design rule for thick membrane accommodation. These design rules aim to address both geometric and physical characteristics in order to obtain the desired wheel shapes and transformation.
