Low-Complexity One-Bit DOA Estimation for Massive ULA with a Single Snapshot

Shaodi Ge et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the low-complexity one-bit direction of arrival (DOA) estimation problem in massive uniform linear arrays (MULAs). By using discrete Fourier transform (DFT), reliable initial DOA estimation can be achieved even when the received data are quantized by one-bit methods. The resulting method, called one-bit DFT, is straightforward and simple to implement, and has lower computational complexity compared to existing one-bit DOA estimation methods. The suggested method can be easily extended to multiple snapshot scenarios, and increasing the number of snapshots can further improve estimation precision.

Enhanced DOA Estimation Exploiting Multi-Frequency Sparse Array

Shuimei Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a general framework of multi-frequency sparse array for estimating the direction-of-arrival of a significantly higher number of targets than the number of physical sensors. By providing zero lag redundancy and developing a modified sensor interpolation technique, the framework enables high-resolution DOA estimation and mitigates the effect of holes in the difference coarray. The proposed technique enhances the DOA estimation performance by considering both self-lags and cross-lags between signals corresponding to different frequencies, compared to existing methods. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the multi-frequency sparse arrays.

Summary: Novel generalized non-redundant sparse array design strategies are proposed to achieve the highest number of degrees-of-freedom for DOA estimation. The design framework provides non-redundant sparse array structures with minimum array aperture and maximum number of correlation lags, surpassing existing sparse array structures. Expansion in two new directions allows for arbitrary array aperture and reduced mutual coupling effects in the design.

Ibrahim Aboumahmoud et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional sparse arrays play a crucial role in localization applications, providing superior direction-of-arrival estimation performance with limited sensors. Research efforts in designing 2D sparse arrays have increased, but lack coordination, resulting in repetitions and conflicting claims. This paper establishes a model for 2D-DoA estimation, consolidates performance metrics, and categorizes existing works, aiming to address fundamental problems and discuss solutions for improving estimation performance.

Summary: This study proposes two angle separation learning schemes (ASLs) to address the coherent DOA estimation problem, reducing computational load and improving DOA estimation performance. Compared to classic sparsity-inducing methods, ASLs can efficiently obtain DOA estimates; moreover, in scenarios with low SNR and limited snapshots, ASLs outperform classic physics-driven and state-of-the-art deep learning-based DOA estimation methods in terms of estimation errors and generalization ability.
