Sulfides and hollows formed on Mercury's surface by reactions with reducing S-rich gases

Summary: The surface of Mercury is enriched in sulfur, and novel experiments suggest that the reaction of Mercury composition glasses with reduced S-rich gas forms sulfides, explaining the formation of hollows on Mercury. The BepiColombo mission will test this hypothesis.

Summary: Synthesized and analyzed silicate glasses resembling those on the surface of Mercury using mid-infrared reflectance spectroscopy, this study found that Mg-rich glasses can reproduce certain surface features, but no single glass mixture can replicate the entire spectrum.

Summary: The study investigated mid-infrared reflectance spectra of anorthosite samples and found a correlation between the degree of Al,Si order in plagioclase minerals and the assumed distance of the sample site to the impact melt. Powdering and sieving led to changes in the spectra due to varying mechanical stability of minerals within the sample.
