Size, morphology, and composition of lunar samples returned by Chang'E-5 mission

Hui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the physical and chemical properties of surficial lunar regolith samples returned from the Moon by the Chang'E-5 mission. It reveals that the lunar regolith structure could have mainly resulted from micrometeoroid impacts.

Updated lunar cratering chronology model with the radiometric age of Chang'e-5 samples

Zongyu Yue et al.

Summary: Lunar chronology models are constructed using the radiometric ages of samples returned by space missions and the distribution of craters on the Moon. The recent Chang'e-5 mission brought back lunar samples with an age of 2.030 +/- 0.004 billion years, which helped update the existing chronology models and revealed significant differences with other models. The updated models provide valuable insights into the chronology and impact history of the inner Solar System.

Chronological and compositional mapping of the Mare Orientale basin using Chandrayaan-1-M3 and LRO datasets

A. Karthi et al.

Summary: This study conducted compositional, topographical, and chronological studies on the Mare Orientale basin on the moon using data from Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera-Wide Angle Camera (LROC-WAC). The results suggest that the basin may have formed either through global thermal evolution and basin mare volcanic evolution or pressure release melting and associated with secondary convection.

Summary: This study investigates lunar mare basalts through the analysis of samples returned by the Chang'e-5 mission. The results reveal different characteristics and levels of evolution in these basaltic samples. Thermodynamic modeling suggests that these basalts were formed under low pressure and reduced conditions.

Ages of lunar impact breccias: Limits for timing of the Imbrium impact

Alexander A. Nemchin et al.

Summary: This study presents new U-Pb ages for Apollo 14 and other lunar breccia samples, suggesting that the Imbrium impact occurred approximately 3922 million years ago. Results indicate that 36 samples can be interpreted as representing the formation of the Imbrium basin, supporting the conclusion that Imbrium material was widely distributed across the near side of the Moon. Additionally, 10 samples with ages about 50 million years younger than 3922 million years may represent a separate single impact event on the Moon, warranting further investigation to enhance our understanding of lunar impact history.

Summary: This study aims to identify the launching sites of lunar meteorites, focusing on the NWA 773 clan, through comparing their geochemical compositions and geochronological information with remote-sensing datasets. The results suggest that the NWA 773 clan most likely originated from the north part of Mare Imbrium.

Young lunar mare basalts in the Chang'e-5 sample return region, northern Oceanus Procellarum

Yuqi Qian et al.

Summary: Chang'e-5 is China's first lunar sample return mission, targeting to land in the northern Oceanus Procellarum region for various geological reasons. The Em4 mare basalts, which cover an area of 37,000 km(2) and are high-Ti basalts from the Eratosthenian age, will provide significant insights into lunar geology.

Qiu-Li Li et al.

Age and composition of young basalts on the Moon, measured from samples returned by Chang'e-5

Xiaochao Che et al.

Summary: By analyzing the youngest basalt lavas on the Moon, scientists have determined their age to be 1963 million years. This finding provides important constraints on the formation history and thermal evolution of the Moon. Additionally, there is no evidence for high concentrations of heat-producing elements in the deep mantle of the Moon, suggesting the need for alternative mechanisms to explain the continuous formation of lunar magmatism.

Non-KREEP origin for Chang'e-5 basalts in the Procellarum KREEP Terrane

Heng-Ci Tian et al.

Summary: The study of basalt clasts from the PKT returned by Chang'e-5 mission reveals that these two-billion-year-old basalts are not derived from KREEP mantle source, but produced high abundances of rare-earth elements and thorium through low-degree partial melting and extensive fractional crystallization. This suggests that the KREEP association may not be a prerequisite for young mare volcanism, indicating a more sustained cooling history of the lunar interior to generate the Moon's youngest melts.
