Constraining the chemical depth profile of a manganese-rich surface layer in Gale crater, Mars

S. J. VanBommel et al.

Summary: Geochemical analyses on the surface of Mars using X-ray spectrometry and LIBS instruments enable detailed studies of surface materials. The differences in analytical techniques can lead to discrepancies in results, but combining both techniques can potentially improve estimates of martian material properties.

Statistical Analysis of APXS-Derived Chemistry of the Clay-Bearing Glen Torridon Region and Mount Sharp Group, Gale Crater, Mars

C. D. O'Connell-Cooper et al.

Summary: The Glen Torridon stratigraphic sequence marks the transition from a lake to a river setting, with changes in sediment composition and diagenesis. APXS results reveal elemental mobility and localized enrichments or depletions, providing important insights into the evolution and geological history of Mars.

Evolved Gas Analyses of Sedimentary Rocks From the Glen Torridon Clay-Bearing Unit, Gale Crater, Mars: Results From the Mars Science Laboratory Sample Analysis at Mars Instrument Suite

A. C. McAdam et al.

Summary: Evolved gas analysis data from the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite confirmed the presence of Fe-rich smectite, carbonate, oxidized organics, Fe/Mg sulfate, and chloride in sedimentary rocks from the Glen Torridon region of Gale crater on Mars. The mineralogy and chemistry data suggest that the environmental history of the region involved alteration with fluids of variable redox potential, chemistry and pH under a range of fluid-to-rock ratio conditions. This indicates the past habitability of the GT region and the availability of carbon for potential microbial life, although the lack of significant nitrogen may have limited microbial habitability.

Mars Science Laboratory CheMin Data From the Glen Torridon Region and the Significance of Lake-Groundwater Interactions in Interpreting Mineralogy and Sedimentary History

Michael T. Thorpe et al.

Summary: The Glen Torridon region in Gale crater on Mars exhibits strong clay mineral signatures, which have been confirmed by the CheMin instrument onboard the Curiosity rover. The presence of new phases such as Fe-carbonates and a novel peak at 9.2 angstroms suggests the potential existence of new mineral species on Mars. Co-occurrence of Fe-carbonate and Fe-rich clay minerals supports a conceptual model of a lacustrine groundwater mixing environment in the GT region.

Alteration at the Base of the Siccar Point Unconformity and Further Evidence for an Alkaline Provenance at Gale Crater: Exploration of the Mount Sharp Group, Greenheugh Pediment Cap Rock Contact With APXS

L. M. Thompson et al.

Summary: Chemical data acquired by Curiosity's Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer during examination of the contact between the upper Mount Sharp group and overlying Stimson formation sandstones at the Greenheugh pediment reveal compositional similarities to rocks encountered earlier in the mission. This provides important clues for studying the geological history of Gale crater.

Manganese Mobility in Gale Crater, Mars: Leached Bedrock and Localized Enrichments

J. A. Berger et al.

Summary: The rover Curiosity has discovered evidence of fluid mobilization of manganese on Mars. The concentration of manganese in the sedimentary units is about half of that in the average Mars crust. Geochemical trends suggest leaching of manganese in the sedimentary bedrock, while low pH fluids leached both manganese and iron in fracture-associated features. Thermochemical modeling indicates that dissolved manganese could have been concentrated and precipitated in localized features. These findings suggest that manganese in Gale crater was mobile and could have been a potential energy source for life.

Origin of Life on Mars: Suitability and Opportunities

Benton C. Clark et al.

Summary: While early Mars is now known to be habitable, its potential for hosting conditions conducive to the independent origin of life (OoL) has been uncertain. Mars mimics various physical and chemical conditions hypothesized as settings for life on Earth, offering water, energy sources, and elements associated with life. The well-preserved ancient surface of Mars informs researchers about possible conditions during Earth's early history, and continued exploration may provide insights for OoL on exoplanets.

Patrick J. Gasda et al.

Summary: The new calibration model for manganese, developed using an expanded set of standards, shows high accuracy with a Root Mean Squared Error of Prediction of 1.39 wt% MnO for the full blended model on a test set of 93 standards. The detection limit for manganese is determined to be 82 ppm, possibly as low as 27 ppm based on visual inspection of the spectra.
