Properties governing flow of solution and air through crushed ore for heap leaching: Part II unsaturated dual-phase flow

S. W. Robertson et al.

Summary: The heap leaching of low-grade ores is limited by the water conditions of the bed, and previous studies have found that the hydraulic conductivity function can be modeled using traditional capillary models at lower moisture contents. Additionally, the function can be modeled as a discontinuous J-curve rather than a continuous one. The empirical rule of a maximum void saturation of 65% for heap aeration aligns with experimental data on average.

Copper sulfides leaching assisted by acidic seawater-based media: Ionic strength and mechanism

Leiming Wang et al.

Summary: The paper critically discusses the utilization of acidic seawater-based media (ASM) in copper hydrometallurgical industries, highlighting its catalytic effects in chemical/bio leaching processes. It also explores the pivotal ions and compounds present in ASM, their regeneration behavior, and the impact on redox potential, reaction activation energy, and leaching kinetics. Furthermore, the potential of ASM as an alternative to freshwater for accelerating copper sulfide leaching in water-scarce areas is highlighted based on previous studies and reviews.

Tortuosity prediction and investigation of fluid flow behavior using pore flow approach in heap leaching

Sina Maghsoudy et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to use the pore flow approach to model the fluid dynamics of heap leaching and predict the permeability of porous media using a novel method. Experimental and numerical modeling results showed that the velocity and pressure distribution in the media corresponded to the pore flow approach, and were strongly influenced by the shape and arrangement of the ore particles. A semi-empirical function was proposed for predicting tortuosity in porous media using a coupled numerical modeling and image processing approach.

HeapSim2D-A 2D axisymmetric model of heap leaching under drip emitters I. Hydrology and solute transport

David G. Dixon et al.

Summary: Research shows that in heap leaching processes, the capillary head parameter hc,0 is the key factor determining the extent of solution spreading under drip emitters. Ores with high capillarity will spread the solution effectively, while ores with low capillarity will confine the flow mostly to a channel below the drip emitter. Additionally, even ores with high capillarity will have a significant unwetted zone at the top of the heap or column.

Hydrodynamic Hysteresis and Solute Transport in Agglomerated Heaps under Irrigation, Stacking, and Bioleaching Controlling

Leiming Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hydrodynamic hysteresis in agglomerated heaps and its impact on solute transport and leaching reactions. The results show that under acidic leaching conditions, the proportion of mobile liquid increases. The dynamic liquid retention is more influenced by the diameter of packed feeds and superficial flow rate rather than leaching reactions. Solute retention is longer under slower flow rates and smaller packed feed diameters, which improves copper leaching efficiency.

Summary: This study used synchrotron X-ray CT and data-constrained modelling to investigate the properties and evolution of pore networks of chalcopyrite-dominant agglomerates during leaching, revealing a strong dependence of copper recovery on the interior structures of agglomerates. Sufficient binding capacity was found to be essential for maintaining agglomerate structure.

Hydrodynamic nonlinear response of interacting integrable systems

Michele Fava et al.

Summary: The study establishes a formalism for computing the nonlinear response of interacting integrable systems, showing results that are asymptotically exact in the hydrodynamic limit. Spatially resolved nonlinear responses can distinguish interacting integrable systems from noninteracting ones, with a method for computing finite-temperature Drude weights and identifying nonperturbative regimes of the nonlinear response.

Capillary and viscous fracturing during drainage in porous media

Francisco J. Carrillo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the transition from fluid invasion to fracturing in soft porous media under various conditions, using a newly developed multiphase Darcy-Brinkman-Biot framework. Three distinct material failure regimes were identified, controlled by nondimensional numbers quantifying the balance of viscous, capillary, and structural forces. This study effectively decouples the effects of viscous and capillary forces on fracturing mechanics.

Analysis of flow resistance in fractal porous media based on a three-dimensional pore-throat model

YingLin Li et al.

Summary: A new three-dimensional pore-throat model is established in this study, and the analytical correlation of flow resistance is derived by employing fractal theory in random porous media. The results show good agreement between the proposed model prediction and experimental data, with better predicting precision under specific conditions.
