Appraisal of urban growth impacts on seawater intrusion vulnerability using GIS-based modified GALDIT-U model: a case study of Kozhikode coastal stretch, Kerala, South India

S. S. Salaj et al.

Summary: This study investigates the vulnerability to seawater intrusion in the aquifers along the Kozhikode coastal stretch using the modified GALDIT-U model and GIS analysis. The results show that urban settlements and eroded shorelines in the proximity of the coast are highly vulnerable to seawater intrusion. The modified GALDIT-U model proves to be an accurate tool for estimating and demarcating the vulnerability zones, providing valuable insights for the sustainable management of coastal aquifers in an urban environment.

New DRASTIC framework for groundwater vulnerability assessment: bivariate and multi-criteria decision-making approach coupled with metaheuristic algorithm

Balaji Lakshminarayanan et al.

Summary: The study introduced a new framework to address the subjectivity of the DRASTIC model by using a bivariate, multi-criteria decision-making approach coupled with a metaheuristic algorithm. The developed Shannon-MH model outperformed other models in groundwater vulnerability assessment based on AU-ROC curve and weighted F1 score, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving the accuracy of vulnerability assessment.

Watershed zonation through hillslope clustering for tractably quantifying above- and below-ground watershed heterogeneity and functions

Haruko M. Wainwright et al.

Summary: In this study, a watershed zonation approach was developed to characterize watershed organization and functions by integrating multiple spatial data layers. The approach successfully identified watershed hillslope zones with unique property distributions and demonstrated their associations with zone-based functions. The results showed that the clustering methods used generated similar zoning patterns across the watershed, and the identified zones provided information about watershed functions.

New hybrid evolutionary algorithm for optimizing index-based groundwater vulnerability assessment method

Maryam Torkashvand et al.

Summary: Limited accessibility to hydrogeological data has led scholars to enhance the robustness of qualitative groundwater vulnerability assessment methods using mathematical techniques. In this study, three GIS-based indices were utilized to assess groundwater vulnerability levels, with the hybrid SWARA-PSOGA framework proving to be the most effective in evaluating the vulnerability of the study area. The optimization of the DRASTIC weighting system through PSO-GA algorithm and the application of SWARA as a MADM method contributed to noticeable improvements in correlation between vulnerability indices and observed nitrate concentration data.
