Controlled drainage under two climate change scenarios in a flat high-latitude field

Aleksi Salla et al.

Summary: This simulation study focused on the hydrological effects of climate change, specifically looking at the potential of controlled drainage and open ditch schemes in managing groundwater levels and field water balance in agricultural fields. The results showed that controlled drainage increased groundwater levels and reduced annual drain discharge compared to conventional subsurface drainage. Additionally, the open collector ditch lowered groundwater tables and diminished the effect of controlled drainage on groundwater levels in its vicinity. Control drainage remains an effective method for countering early summer drought and reducing drain discharge.

Summary: This study evaluates the future of subsurface drainage in La Jailliere, France from a hydrological perspective and in the context of climate change. The findings suggest that the sustainability of the drainage system design is at risk, with potential consequences such as increased runoff and water quality issues.

Unraveling the contribution of potential evaporation formulation to uncertainty under climate change

Thibault Lemaitre-Basset et al.

Summary: In this study, we analyzed the sources of uncertainty in the potential evaporation (PE) modeling chain for hydrological studies. The results showed that the contributions of different factors, such as PE formulations, Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios, GCMs, and RCMs, varied. All PE formulations showed similar future trends, but the Penman-Monteith formulation was found to be more representative in hydrological impact studies.

Impact of climate change on Swedish agriculture: Growing season rain deficit and irrigation need

Youen Grusson et al.

Summary: The study indicates that Swedish agriculture may need to increase irrigation to adapt to the risks posed by climate change. Calculations show that irrigation needs for cereal crops may increase in the early season (May-June), while crops with later growing seasons (such as potatoes) may see an increase in irrigation needs in July.

Climate change impact and uncertainty analysis on hydrological extremes in a French Mediterranean catchment

Thibault Lemaitre-Basset et al.

Summary: The Mediterranean region is a climate change hotspot for water resources, but uncertainty analyses of hydrological projections are rarely quantified. The study found that high flows may increase by 30% on average by 2085, with the highest uncertainty contribution from RCPs and GCMs; while 50% of low-flow projections indicate a decrease of 7% or more by 2085, with the most important sources of uncertainty being HM structures, hydrological model parameters, and GCMs.

Uncertainty of potential evapotranspiration modelling in climate change impact studies on low flows in North America

Gabrielle Dallaire et al.

Summary: This study investigates the uncertainty in hydroclimatic modelling chain components on future changes in potential evapotranspiration and low flows in watersheds. Results show an increase in potential evapotranspiration and a decrease in low flows with climate change. The study recommends the use of multiple hydrological model-PET formula combinations to assess the impact of climate change on low flows.

Robustness of a parsimonious subsurface drainage model at the French national scale

Summary: The implementation of drainage systems on agricultural plots in France accounts for 9% of arable soils, highlighting the need for accurate hydrological modeling in the face of climate change. The study assesses the capability of the SIDRA-RU hydrological drainage model to represent the variability in pedoclimatic conditions and demonstrates its utility as a long-term management tool. Results show that the model accurately simulates drainage discharge on different soil textures, indicating its potential for managing French drained soil diversity in the long run.

Assessment of Impacts of Climate Change on Tile Discharge and Nitrogen Yield Using the DRAINMOD Model

Golmar Golmohammadi et al.

Summary: The study used DRAINMOD model to assess the impact of future climatic change on depth to water table, tile flow and associated nitrate loss in an agricultural field in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Results indicated that under future climates, there will be increases in tile flows, evapotranspiration and nitrate losses. These findings suggest that climate change will have a significant effect on field hydrology and water quality in tile-drained agricultural regions.
