Non-Darcy Flow Through a Natural Streambed in a Disconnected Stream

Zhitong Ma et al.

Summary: Seepage flux from disconnected streams can be a main source of groundwater recharge, but the relationship between seepage flux and stream stage is uncertain due to a lack of in situ observations. This study investigated the change in seepage flow regime with stream stage in a natural streambed and found two flow regimes, Darcy and non-Darcy, with the change of the stream stage.

Three decades of depth-dependent groundwater response to climate variability and human regime in the transboundary Indus-Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna mega river basin aquifers

Pragnaditya Malakar et al.

Summary: This study attributed the impact of local precipitation, global climate cycles, and human influence on multi-depth groundwater levels in the IGBM over a period of 30 years using statistical analysis methods. The results revealed variable phase lags between groundwater levels and precipitation in different parts of the basin, as well as the dominant influence of groundwater abstraction in most areas, particularly at greater depths of the aquifer.

Runoff and focused groundwater-recharge response to flooding rains in the arid zone of Australia

R. Ian Acworth et al.

Summary: The groundwater recharge investigation in the arid zone of Australia utilized a variety of hydrogeological techniques to study the response of the aquifer to rainfall events. The results showed that the total magnitude of a flood event is not the main control on indirect groundwater recharge at this location, and indicated the episodic and nonlinear nature of recharge in such environments. More detailed and long-term field investigation in other arid zone locations is recommended to further understand the dynamic processes governing groundwater recharge.

Groundwater mixing in shallow aquifers stressed by land cover/land use changes under hyper-arid conditions

Mahmoud M. Khalil et al.

Summary: The impact of migration of urban, agricultural, and industrial activities to the desert fringes of the Nile Delta triggered changes in land cover/land use, introducing new recharge sources to groundwater mixing dynamics. This study integrated remote sensing, chemical, and isotopic data with multivariate statistical analysis to identify groundwater sources and mixing dynamics in response to LCLU changes. The findings provide a good basis for further studies on groundwater mixing and contamination assessment in shallow aquifers under stress from LCLU changes in hyper-arid environments.

Using multiple methods to investigate the effects of land-use changes on groundwater recharge in a semi-arid area

Shovon Barua et al.

Summary: Understanding recharge rates in semi-arid areas is crucial for assessing land-use changes and managing groundwater resources. This study in southeast Australia found differences in recharge rates estimated by different methods and identified uncertainties in the specific yield results leading to potential overestimation of recharge rates. Despite land-use changes, present-day recharge rates are relatively modest.
