Plasticity in rotifer morphology induced by conflicting threats from multiple predators

Huan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that prey exhibit active responses against predators, developing different morphological traits in response to different threats. Prey can discriminate between predators and produce countermeasures, adjusting their morphology and life-history traits to adapt to the existing predator regimes. When faced with conflicting threats from a combination of predators, prey develop intermediate, trade-off responses in all morphological traits to cope with the multiple predator pressures.

Eutrophication and predation mediate zooplankton diversity and network structure

Yun Li et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic activities such as eutrophication and fishing have significant impacts on freshwater ecosystems. A study of zooplankton communities in subtropical shallow lakes in eastern China revealed that nutrient enrichment and predation have joint effects on biodiversity and ecological networks. Our findings show that nutrient conditions negatively affect alpha diversity, while beta diversity and network skewness are influenced by nutrients and omnivorous fish, with top-down effects dominating the structural adjustment of zooplankton communities.

Global dynamics of a generalist predator-prey model in open advective environments

Yuan Lou et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the dynamics of a generalist predator-prey model in open advective environments, characterized by reaction-diffusion-advection equations. It reveals that critical advection rates and predation rates determine the global dynamics of the system, including coexistence, persistence of prey alone, persistence of predators alone, and extinction of both species. The findings also highlight the differences between the generalist predator-prey system and the specialist predator-prey system in terms of critical predation rates, take-over of the generalist predator, and parameter range for the persistence of prey species alone.

Environmental stressor induces morphological alterations in zooplankton

Jesus Alvarado-Flores et al.

Summary: Exposure to hazardous materials can cause morphological alterations in zooplankton, which serve as indicators of adverse effects at (sub) individual and population levels. These alterations are more frequent in subsequent generations, highlighting the importance of studying the causes and consequences of such changes.

The exploitation of sexual signals by predators: a meta-analysis

Thomas E. White et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to test the preferences of predators, parasites, and parasitoids for the sexual signals of prey and found strong preferences in forced-choice contexts. In the wild, there was an overall increase in predation on sexual signallers, particularly for olfactory and acoustic signals. However, there was high variation in outcome measures, suggesting that sexual signalling may not always incur costs and may even reduce predation incidence in some contexts.

Protistan epibionts affect prey selectivity patterns and vulnerability to predation in a cyclopoid copepod

Ram Kumar et al.

Summary: Colonisation of crustacean zooplankton with ciliate epibionts is a common phenomenon in freshwater and marine environments. This study investigated the ecology of this association, including the preference of epibionts for different life stages of Mesocyclops and the impact of climatic factors on the colonisation process. It was found that copepodites were most susceptible to epibiont infestation, followed by copepod nauplii. The occurrence of epibionts varied with season, with autotrophic epibionts observed in winter and heterotrophic protists found in late spring and early summer. Laboratory experiments also revealed a lower attack probability in infested copepods compared to uninfested ones. These findings highlight the importance of substrate preference by epibionts and their impacts in different environmental conditions.

Complex Trophic Interactions in an Acidophilic Microbial Community

Guntram Weithoff et al.

Summary: Extreme habitats often have unique communities with different species compositions compared to non-extreme habitats. In this study, we investigated the trophic interactions between a predatory protist and its prey in an extremophilic community. Our results revealed the complexity of these interactions and the impact of resource availability on the abundance of different species.

Behavioural Responses of Defended and Undefended Prey to Their Predator-A Case Study of Rotifera

Victor Parry et al.

Summary: This study examined the behavior of prey and their predator, and found that protected prey species do not respond to the presence of the predator, while unprotected prey species increase their swimming speed. This suggests that protected prey have a different response behavior to predators.
