Preterm Birth Alters the Maturation of the GABAergic System in the Human Prefrontal Cortex

Helene Lacaille et al.

Summary: Developmental changes in the GABAergic and glutamatergic systems in the frontal lobe are believed to be important in neurodevelopmental disorders seen in very preterm or low birth weight children. This study focused on the molecular development of the GABAergic system in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, finding that the maturation state of this system was more dynamic in male infants. Premature birth was also found to have a significant impact on the GABAergic system development, particularly in male infants, suggesting a new cellular mechanism underlying preterm brain injury.

Summary: The study found that OPN expression is elevated in microglia and astrocytes in white matter injury and germinal matrix hemorrhage cases of preterm infants, suggesting its involvement in the inflammatory process in white matter injury.

Longitudinal Trajectories of Regional Cerebral Blood Flow in Very Preterm Infants during Third Trimester ex Utero Development Assessed with MRI

Zungho Zun et al.

Summary: This study longitudinally assessed cerebral blood flow in very preterm infants during the ex utero third trimester, showing significant increases in all regions with advancing postmenstrual age, particularly in the cerebellum. Lower CBF was associated with intraventricular hemorrhage and medically managed patent ductus arteriosus in preterm infants.
