Improved boundary conditions for models of coupled heat and water vapor transfer between an adsorbent and the ambient

W. Willems

Summary: Boundary conditions for coupled heat and water vapor transfer in hygroscopic solids must consider the change in relative humidity and temperature deviation between the adsorbent and the ambient. Moisture change rates are significantly reduced in adsorbents with steep slope sorption isotherms at intermediate or high relative humidity levels. Poor thermal design of the sorption setup can worsen the dynamic response rate, affecting the steady-state and effective transient moisture diffusion coefficients.

Wettability of welded wood-joints investigated by the Wilhelmy method: part 1. Determination of apparent contact angles, swelling, and water sorption

Mojgan Vaziri et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that welding treatment leads to higher hydrophobicity and lower water uptake and swelling in pine joints, while beech joints show increased hydrophobicity, decreased water uptake, but increased swelling. The welding process increases specific absorption bands in pine and beech, promoting a dense structure in the joints.

Welding of Thermally Modified Wood and Thermal Modification of the Welded Wood: Effects on the Shear Strength under Climatic Conditions

Mojgan Vaziri et al.

Summary: The study found that thermal treatment of wood before or after welding negatively affected the shear strength of welded joints, resulting in brittle failure modes. Wood modified before welding produced a rigid material at the weld interface, while welding wood before thermal modification yielded thicker and denser joints.
