Development and Application of an Open Tool for Sharing and Analyzing Integrated Clinical and Environmental Exposures Data: Asthma Use Case

Karamarie Fecho et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of the open-source ICEES as a tool for exposing and exploring integrated clinical and environmental data. The results show significant associations between factors such as proximity to major roadways or highways, exposure to high levels of particulate matter or ozone, female sex, Caucasian race, low residential density, lack of health insurance, low household income, and asthma exacerbations.

Open Application of Statistical and Machine Learning Models to Explore the Impact of Environmental Exposures on Health and Disease: An Asthma Use Case

Bo Lan et al.

Summary: ICEES provides an integrated approach for analyzing clinical and environmental exposure data at the patient level. Three multivariate methods were used to identify predictors of asthma exacerbations, with significant variables including prednisone, race, airborne particulate exposure, obesity, and sex. The results from generalized linear models and machine learning methods were consistent in predicting asthma exacerbations.
