Isolation and characterization of a novel Lambda-like phage infecting the bloom-forming cyanobacteria Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii

Emmanuelle Laloum et al.

Summary: Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii is a cyanobacteria that forms central blooms, but little is known about its interactions with phages. This study isolated and characterized Cr-LKS3, a phage that infects Cylindrospermopsis. Cr-LKS3 is a siphovirus with a genome similarity to prophages in heterotrophic bacteria genomes, suggesting it represents a new cyanophage group. Despite low sequence similarity, the gene function, order, and orientation of Cr-LKS3 are similar to Escherichia virus Lambda. Additionally, Cr-LKS3 can infect a host with different GC content and shows potential lysogenic lifestyle.

Genomic Characterization of a Novel Freshwater Cyanophage Reveals a New Lineage of Cyanopodovirus

Dong Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents the characterization of a new cyanophage, S-SRP02, which infects cyanobacteria in a tropical freshwater lake. S-SRP02 is evolutionarily distinct from marine cyanopodoviruses but shares gene similarities with uncultured phages from the Mediterranean Sea. Studying the genomes and ecological importance of these phages aids in understanding the interactions between cyanobacteria and phages.

Genetic engineering of marine cyanophages reveals integration but not lysogeny in T7-like cyanophages

Dror Shitrit et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple and generalizable method, named REEP, for genetic engineering of cyanophages, enabling direct investigation of key cyanophage genes. The findings suggest that the integration of T7-like cyanophages is transient and does not lead to the formation of stable lysogens.

Novel Virus on FilamentousArthronema africanumCyanobacterium

Karel Petrzik et al.

Summary: A novel bacteriophage named Arthronema africanum virus TR020 (Aa-TR020) has been isolated from filamentous freshwater cyanobacterium Arthronema africanum, showing genetic relatedness to other cyanobacteria-infecting viruses. The genome of Aa-TR020 is a linear dsDNA molecule with 55 predicted genes, similar in structure to viruses classified in the family Podoviridae.

The landscape of lysogeny across microbial community density, diversity and energetics

Cynthia B. Silveira et al.

Summary: Lysogens are common at high bacterial densities due to coinfections, diversity, and host energy status, resulting in a bimodal distribution of lysogeny. High cell densities favor phage integration through coinfections and excess energy availability, while low densities prolong lysogenic commitment due to starvation. Intermediate densities promote lysis through encounter rates and efficient energy metabolism.

Rapid discovery of novel prophages using biological feature engineering and machine learning

Kimmo Siren et al.

Summary: Prophages are phages integrated into bacterial genomes, crucial for understanding bacterial biology, yet their diversity makes them challenging to detect using traditional methods. Researchers propose a machine learning method based on feature space, which, when applied to public data, significantly improves the speed and accuracy of phage detection, providing a new starting point for exploring novel biologies.
