Autoimmune gastritis: long-term natural history in naive Helicobacter pylori-negative patients

Massimo Rugge et al.

Summary: The study found that autoimmune gastritis (AIG) patients exhibit oxyntic-predominant-mononuclear inflammation, PPM (more than IM), and ECL-cell hyperplasia/neoplasia as histological hallmarks. Over a cumulative follow-up time of 10,541 person years, there was no excess risk of gastric or other malignancies found, except for a (marginally significant) risk of thyroid cancer.

Proton pump inhibitors and risk of gastric cancer: population-based cohort study

Devin Abrahami et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of PPIs is associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer compared with the use of H2RAs, although the absolute risk remains low.

Severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19 associated with proton pump inhibitors: a nationwide cohort study with propensity score matching

Seung Won Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that current use of PPIs was associated with a higher risk of severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19, while past use of PPIs was not significantly associated with the infection of SARS-CoV-2.

Association between proton pump inhibitor use and gastric cancer: a population-based cohort study using two different types of nationwide databases in Korea

Seung In Seo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and gastric cancer in a high-risk region like Korea. The results showed that PPI use was associated with an increased incidence of gastric cancer, regardless of Helicobacter pylori eradication status. Long-term use of PPI should be approached with caution in high-risk regions for gastric cancer.

Effects of Proton Pump Inhibitor Therapy, H. pylori Infection and Gastric Preneoplastic Pathology on Fasting Serum Gastrin Concentrations

Reuben Veysey-Smith et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that PPI use, Helicobacter pylori infection, and atrophic gastritis significantly increased fasting serum gastrin concentrations. However, some patients with potential risk factors for hypergastrinaemia still showed normal fasting serum gastrin concentrations.
