U-Pb dating of detrital zircon from Permian successions of the South Kitakami Belt, Northeast Japan: Clues to the paleogeography of the belt

Yuxiao Li et al.

Summary: The South Kitakami Belt in northeast Japan contains a unique thick Paleozoic-Mesozoic sedimentary rock sequence, with evidence of various igneous activities at different periods. Based on zircon dating, it is suggested that during the Permian, the South Kitakami Belt was located at the margin of the South Central Asian Orogenic Belt.

Late Carboniferous (Kasimovian and Gzhelian) fusulines of the Ichinotani and Mizuyagadani formations in the Fukuji area, Hida Marginal Terrane, central Japan

Fumio Kobayashi

Summary: This study reexamines the fusuline biostratigraphy and faunal composition of the upper part of the Ichinotani Formation and lower part of the Mizuyagadani Formation in the Fukuji area, central Japan, and compares them to previous works. The findings suggest a more complex geological structure of the Upper Member of the Ichinotani Formation and the absence of correlatable fusulines in the Fukuji area.

U-Pb detrital zircon ages of Cambrian-Ordovician sandstones from the Taebaeksan Basin, Korea: Provenance variability in platform shelf sequences and paleogeographic implications

Moonsup Cho et al.

Summary: The study sheds light on the Paleozoic paleogeography of East Gondwanan terranes, particularly the North China Craton, using new data from sandstones in the Taebaeksan Basin, Korea. It reveals the vestige of coeval arc magmatism and significant changes in provenance, possibly linked to variations in paleowater depths. Detrital zircons with distinct distribution patterns suggest a connection to the proto-Japan arc and indicate a sedimentary influx from contemporaneous volcanic activity.

Early Carboniferous HP metamorphism in the Hida Gaien Belt, Japan: Implications for the Palaeozoic tectonic history of proto-Japan

Takumi Yoshida et al.

Summary: New eclogite localities in the western most region of Niigata Prefecture, Japan were studied to determine metamorphic conditions and pressure-temperature paths, which revealed a hairpin-shaped P-T path from epidote-blueschist to peak eclogite and retrograde blueschist facies. The peak P-T conditions of the eclogites were estimated to be around 600 degrees C and up to 2.0 GPa using various thermobarometry techniques. The results provide clear constraints on the early Carboniferous subduction and contribute to understanding the tectonic history of proto-Japan.

Revisiting the tectonic evolution of the Triassic Palaeo-Tethys convergence zone in northern Thailand inferred from detrital zircon U-Pb ages

Hidetoshi Hara et al.

Summary: Detrital zircon U-Pb ages from sediments in northern Thailand provide constraints for tectonic interpretations of the Indochina Block, Sibumasu Block, Inthanon Zone accretionary complex, and Nan Back-arc Basin during the Triassic. These ages also reveal the changing tectonic settings in the Palaeo-Tethys convergence zone.

Summary: The evolution of Tethyan ocean basins in Asia spans over 500 million years, involving opening and closure of oceans, collision of continental blocks, and formation of major orogenic belts. This complex geological history has shaped Asia's landscape and mineral resource distribution significantly.

Use of detrital zircon U-Pb ages to assess the timing of deposition of Cretaceous trench-fill deposits in the active continental arc along the East Asian margin

Tetsuya Tokiwa et al.

Summary: The U-Pb ages of detrital zircons from the Cretaceous Shimanto accretionary complex in southwestern Japan were compared with true depositional ages inferred from radiolarian fossils. The youngest detrital zircon ages obtained from trench-fill sandstones showed good agreement with true depositional ages for Albian-Cenomanian strata, but discrepancies were found for Turonian-Maastrichtian strata. YC1 sigma and YC2 sigma methods showed the closest correspondence to the true depositional ages.

Gondwana's interlinked peripheral orogens

Peter A. Cawood et al.

Summary: After its assembly in the Ediacaran-Early Cambrian, Gondwana was surrounded by a system of peripheral orogens, including Terra Australis, Avalonian-Cadomian, and North Indo-Australie, which showed temporal correlations in their lithotectonic records. The development of these orogens was influenced by the breakup of Rodinia in the early Neoproterozoic, with variations reflecting the different relationships of their basement continental blocks to the supercontinent. The different orogens recorded the development of passive continental margins or convergent plate margins prior to Gondwana's assembly.

Evidence for crustal removal, tectonic erosion and flare-ups from the Japanese evolving forearc sediment provenance

Daniel Pastor-Galan et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates changes in a long-lived subduction system using detrital zircon U-Pb and Hf-isotope data from forearc units in northern Honshu, Japan. The data reveal dominant age peaks and progressive loss of older zircon populations, with Hf-isotope data showing three discrete shifts corresponding to differing degrees of isotopic enrichment. Each temporal isotopic shift is associated with the isolation of older sedimentary packages, providing evidence for rapid shifts in arc tectonics.

Syn-Subduction Strike-Slip Faults Shape an Accretionary Orogen and its Provenance Signatures: Insights From Sikhote-Alin in NE Asia During the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates provenance changes in the Sikhote-Alin orogenic belt in the Russian Far East and finds that large-scale strike-slip faults can transport depocenters over long distances, altering provenance information. Sediments to the west are mainly derived from the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, while those to the east come from the Korean Peninsula, suggesting that these differences are not due to variations in source regions but rather related to tectonic displacements along the fault.
