Prediction of wall deflection induced by braced excavation in spatially variable soils via convolutional neural network

Chongzhi Wu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN) surrogate model based on the classical architecture VGG6 for random field finite element analysis (RF-FEM). The model effectively reduces the computational burden and shows great potential in reliability analysis of spatially variable soils.

Summary: The so-called Fourth Paradigm has led to the availability of large volumes of observational data for scientists and engineers. The concept of big data aligns well with geoengineering and geoscience, and machine learning, deep learning, and optimization algorithms offer insights into geotechnical problems. This review paper comprehensively summarizes the state-of-the-art applications of these algorithms in geoengineering and geoscience and provides guidelines for researchers and engineers in integrating and applying these methods.

Suitable site selection for pistachio (Pistacia vera) by using GIS and multi-criteria decision analyses (a case study in Turkey)

Timucin Everest

Summary: Efficient use of natural resources requires rational management techniques, especially when it comes to managing land for sustainable use. As land is finite and faces increasing competition for non-agricultural purposes, land evaluation and planning have become major issues for future utilization. Through the use of methods such as GIS and MCDA, suitable sites for cultivation can be determined, contributing to the protection of the environment and the development of sustainable land-use policies.

AHP-GIS and MaxEnt for delineation of potential distribution of Arabica coffee plantation under future climate in Yunnan, China

Shuo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the ecological suitability of Arabica coffee plantation using MaxEnt model and AHP-GIS technology, finding that climate factors significantly affected the ecological suitability, with maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and annual precipitation being the most important factors. The models predicted potential distribution of Arabica coffee under climate change scenario, providing reference for long-term planning and development programs to mitigate climate change effects on Arabica coffee distribution.

District based flood risk assessment in Istanbul using fuzzy analytical hierarchy process

Omer Ekmekcioglu et al.

Summary: Flooding is one of the most frequent and severe hazards in the world, posing a significant threat to the sustainability of built environments and populations in Istanbul. This study proposes a new hierarchical procedure using fuzzy analytical hierarchy process to generate a flood risk map for Istanbul districts, identifying land use and storm event return periods as the most significant criteria for vulnerability and hazard clusters. The findings of the study highlight the usefulness of the fuzzy AHP method for quick and regional flood risk assessment, as well as for allocating resources to mitigate flood risks effectively.
