Depositional age, provenance, and palaeoenvironment of the Lower Permian mudstones in the Qiangtang Basin, Tibet: Evidence from geochronology and geochemistry

Summary: The study on the geochronology of tuffaceous sandstone and elemental geochemistry of mudstones in the Lower Permian Zhanjin Formation in the Central Qiangtang Basin revealed the depositional age, provenance, tectonic setting, and depositional conditions of the formation. The results suggest that the mudstones in the Zhanjin Formation mainly originated from mixed mafic and felsic sources in the Central Qiangtang Basin, with a depositional age tentatively constrained to the Early Permian. The sedimentary features and trace element ratios indicate that the studied mudstones were deposited in an open marine environment along the continental margin, with oxic and dysoxic water columns.

Intensified continental chemical weathering and carbon-cycle perturbations linked to volcanism during the Triassic-Jurassic transition

Summary: Direct evidence of intense chemical weathering induced by volcanism is rare in sedimentary successions. In this study, the authors analyzed two well-dated Triassic-Jurassic boundary sections and found increasing chemical index of alteration (CIA) in association with mercury (Hg) peaks near the boundary, indicating volcanism-induced intensification of continental chemical weathering. The interval of enhanced chemical weathering lasted for approximately 2 million years, consistent with carbon-cycle model results. Furthermore, the data suggest that high-latitude continental settings are more sensitive to shifts in weathering intensity during climatic warming events compared to low/middle-latitude sites.

Late Triassic basin inversion of the Qiangtang Basin in northern Tibet: Implications for the closure of the Paleo-Tethys and expansion of the Neo-Tethys

Summary: The sedimentologic and tectonic records in the Qiangtang Basin reveal a negative basin inversion during the Late Triassic, indicating the closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean and the expansion of the Neo-Tethys Ocean. The basin inversion is characterized by a shift in sedimentary facies and a transition from marine to terrestrial erosion. The volcanic rocks and U-Pb ages suggest that the basin inversion was initiated by the Nadi Kangri bimodal volcanic eruption and marked the exhumation of the northern Qiangtang foreland basin. The initiation of Qiangtang rifting in the late Late Triassic is attributed to the rapid expansion of the Neo-Tethys Ocean.
