The Nazca Drift System - palaeoceanographic significance of a giant sleeping on the SE Pacific Ocean floor

Gerome Calves et al.

Summary: The evolution and morphology of a contourite drift system in the SE Pacific ocean basin is investigated in detail using seismic imaging and borehole section. The Nazca Drift System covers an area of 204,500 km(2) and is the largest abyssal drift system of the Pacific Ocean.

Abrupt conclusion of the late Miocene-early Pliocene biogenic bloom at 4.6-4.4 Ma

B. -Th Karatsolis et al.

Summary: This study found that ocean productivity abruptly declined about 4.6 million years ago, potentially due to reduced seasonality and monsoon intensity leading to decreased nutrient supply. The previous period of productivity bloom was attributed to an increase or redistribution of available nutrients. The decline in low-latitude ocean productivity was found to be linked to a weakened monsoon and decreased riverine nutrient supply.

Age and provenance of the Mio-Pleistocene sediments from the Sacaco area, Peruvian continental margin

Diana Ochoa et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive chronostratigraphic review of the Mio-Pleistocene record for the Sacaco sub-basin, providing a composite stratigraphic section and depositional ages for the Pisco, Caracoles, and Pongo formations. The results show that the sedimentary successions in the Sacaco area accumulated in a subsiding setting and exhibit a shallowing-upwards trend. Provenance analysis reveals changes in source areas over time.

Miocene fossils from the southeastern Pacific shed light on the last radiation of marine crocodylians

Rodolfo Salas-Gismondi et al.

Summary: Fossils from marine deposits in Peru reveal that crocodylians were coastal residents in the southeastern Pacific for approximately 14 million years during the Miocene epoch. The fossil record shows that the evolution of marine crocodylians primarily occurred in gavialids and their stem relatives. Marine gavialoids were shallow sea dwellers and their diversification was influenced by coastal habitats. However, they disappeared from the sea during the Pliocene marine megafauna extinction.

The Miocene: The Future of the Past

M. Steinthorsdottir et al.

Summary: The Miocene epoch was a period of global warmth with dynamic climate changes. Despite efforts to reconcile Miocene conditions with climate models, discrepancies remain. Research is ongoing to improve understanding of Miocene climate, ocean circulation, biogeochemical cycling, ice sheet dynamics, and biotic adaptation through new data integration.

The Miocene stratigraphy of the Laberinto area (Rio Ica Valley) and its bearing on the geological history of the East Pisco Basin (south-central Peru)

Thomas J. DeVries et al.

Summary: Research in the Laberinto area of the East Pisco forearc basin in south-central Peru has shown significant global sea-level changes and vertical displacement, impacting the accumulation of Miocene sediments. Two depositional hiatuses occurred around 17-14 Ma and 12.5-10 Ma, leading to erosion and sediment-filled depressions. This study provides new insights into correlations within the Chilcatay and Pisco formations, as well as the interaction of local and basin-wide tectonism and global sea-level events.

Global continental and marine detrital εNd: An updated compilation for use in understanding marine Nd cycling

Suzanne Robinson et al.

Summary: Understanding the role of sediment-water interactions in the oceanic cycling of neodymium isotopes is crucial for its use as a tracer of ocean circulation. By compiling and mapping extensive terrestrial and marine sedimentary Nd isotopic measurements, high resolution global maps characterizing Nd-isotopic signature are constructed. The results show distinct patterns in different ocean regions, providing valuable information for improving conceptual knowledge of Nd sources and sinks and enabling isotope-enabled ocean models to better understand Nd behavior in the oceans.

Andean mountain building since the Late Cretaceous: A paleoelevation reconstruction

Lydian M. Boschman

Summary: The Andes, the longest continental mountain range on Earth, started forming in the Late Cretaceous with highly diachronous uplift in different regions. Reconstructing the timing of surface uplift is crucial for understanding continental-scale moisture transport, the origin and evolution of the Amazon River and Rainforest, and the coevolution of solid Earth, landscapes, climate, and life in South America.

Vertebrate Palaeoecology of the Pisco Formation (Miocene, Peru): Glimpses into the Ancient Humboldt Current Ecosystem

Alberto Collareta et al.

Summary: Based on a detailed palaeoecological analysis of the Miocene vertebrate assemblages in southern Peru, the study reveals the historical changes in the ancient ecosystem of the Humboldt Current, from the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum to the subsequent cooling period. The Pisco Formation shows warm, semi-enclosed near-shore environments in the lowermost, middle Miocene sequence, while a more open setting with wide-ranging species dominates in the younger portions, reflecting the evolution of the ecosystem at that time.

Taphonomy of marine vertebrates of the Pisco Formation (Miocene, Peru): Insights into the origin of an outstanding Fossil-Lagerstatte

Giulia Bosio et al.

Summary: The Miocene Pisco Formation in southern Peru is known for its exceptional preservation and abundance of vertebrate fossils, including whales and dolphins. The study suggests that the exceptional preservation of many Pisco vertebrates is attributed to the interplay of several favorable factors rather than a single cause, such as high sedimentation rates proposed in the past.
