Prioritising Sustainable Development Goals, characterising interactions, and identifying solutions for local sustainability

Reihaneh Bandari et al.

Summary: The United Nations 2030 Agenda takes a holistic and multi-sectoral view on sustainability through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the successful implementation of this agenda depends on understanding the synergies and trade-offs among SDGs. A case study in the Goulburn-Murray region in Victoria, Australia identified clean water and sanitation, agricultural activities, economic growth, climate action, and life on land as the top five priority SDGs for the region, highlighting potential trade-offs between unsustainable agricultural practices and water resources, the environment, and sustainable economic growth. Ongoing uncertainties like climate change, policies on environmental water recovery, international markets, and emerging technologies could pose risks for the future of agriculture and the economy.

Lessons learnt from previous local sustainability efforts to inform local action for the Sustainable Development Goals

Dianty Ningrum et al.

Summary: Local communities play a crucial role in global sustainability efforts and their actions can have significant impacts on social and environmental systems. However, our understanding of the factors enabling and constraining local action is limited. This paper synthesizes lessons learned from the Local Agenda 21 (LA21) to inform local action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through a systematic review of 87 empirical cases, the study identifies reliable resources, supportive planning and policymaking practice, competent local actors, and trust between them as the most frequent enablers of local sustainability processes in the context of LA21.

Early systems change necessary for catalyzing long- term sustainability in a post-2030 agenda

Enayat A. Moallemi et al.

Summary: Progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has fallen short of expectations and may not fully meet the 2030 targets. Previous evaluations have focused on short- and medium-term assessments, but a longer-term view is needed to explore the long-term effects of sustainability. Early planning for system change is crucial for accelerating progress and achieving ambitious goals by 2030, 2050, and 2100.
