Increase in rainfall intensity promotes soil nematode diversity but offset by nitrogen addition in a temperate grassland

Shuyan Cui et al.

Summary: The precipitation regime in arid and semi-arid regions is changing, with an increase in rainfall intensity but a decrease in frequency. Nitrogen (N) deposition also occurs in these regions. Nematodes, as the dominant soil biota, play important roles in various underground processes. This study found that fewer but stronger precipitation events increased the abundance and diversity of nematodes, but N addition reduced nematode diversity, largely offsetting the positive effects of increased rainfall intensity alone. Soil pH and plant belowground biomass were the main factors influencing nematode diversity. These results suggest that an increase in the intensity of rainfall events in the future may favor nematode communities in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, but this positive effect may be counteracted by soil acidification in regions experiencing heavy N deposition.

Nitrogen deposition and climate: an

Elizabeth T. Borer et al.

Summary: Human activities have doubled reactive nitrogen deposition in ecosystems, impacting plant, animal, and microbial communities. Biotic responses to nitrogen deposition vary depending on local climate and soils, limiting our ability to predict ecosystem responses.

The orchard plot: Cultivating a forest plot for use in ecology, evolution, and beyond

Shinichi Nakagawa et al.

Summary: Classic forest plots are often not suitable for meta-analyses in ecology and evolution due to the large number of effect sizes involved. A survey of 102 meta-analyses found that only 11% used classic forest plots, with most opting for a forest-like plot instead. The proposed orchard plot, a modification of the forest-like plot, includes prediction intervals and scaled individual effect sizes, providing a more intuitive interpretation of data heterogeneity and influential outliers.

Divergent effects of drought and nitrogen deposition on microbial and arthropod soil communities in a Mediterranean forest

Guille Peguero et al.

Summary: Global change drivers such as warming and increased nitrogen availability are impacting soil communities worldwide, with potential consequences for terrestrial ecosystem functioning. Responses of soil organisms to these drivers are complex and may lead to shifts in food web structures and ecosystem properties, highlighting the importance of considering interactions among different factors for predicting biodiversity responses and ecosystem consequences.

Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses in ecology and evolutionary biology: a PRISMA extension

Rose E. O'Dea et al.

Summary: Since the early 1990s, ecologists and evolutionary biologists have used meta-analytic methods to aggregate primary research and understand ecological and evolutionary phenomena. While meta-analyses can help resolve disputes and generate new questions, the quality of the publications depends on transparent and reproducible reporting by the authors. Improving reporting quality may require referencing guidelines and using structured methods.

Using information-theoretic approaches for model selection in meta-analysis

Ozan Cinar et al.

Summary: Meta-regression uses regression-type methods to examine the association between effect size estimates and study characteristics in a meta-analysis. Model selection through testing, including univariate models or models with all moderators, is the commonly used approach. Alternative methods like information criteria and multimodel inference may outperform traditional model selection methods, showing higher probabilities of identifying the true model under certain scenarios.

Long-term nitrogen addition and precipitation reduction decrease soil nematode community diversity in a temperate forest

Honglin Wang et al.

Summary: Global change factors like nitrogen deposition and precipitation reduction have significant impacts on terrestrial ecosystems, affecting both aboveground and underground processes. This study found that both nitrogen addition and precipitation reduction caused changes in the composition of soil nematode communities, with nitrogen addition having a more severe negative effect compared to precipitation reduction. Additionally, nitrogen addition and precipitation reduction had a synergistic effect on soil nematode communities.
